m4a files won't play but mp3 play fine
« on: July 27, 2006, 09:41:24 pm »

I have been using Media Center for about 3 years without any significant issues and upgraded to MC 11 a couple of months back.  I have experienced no problems until a couple of days ago when I experienced a problem with all of my m4a files.  ape and mp3 files play fine but m4a files just fast forward through the file with no sound.

I am perplexed  ?

I have checked all of my settings and everything seems fine.  I haven't used itunes for a long while but upgraded it and it plays the m4a files without any issues.

Any suggestions?

Do you have certain DirectShow filters that could misbehave?

I have not installed any DirectShow filters to my knowledge.

From reading other posts, I understand that I need to install the following in order to play m4a files:

ffdshow from http://ffdshow.sourceforge.net/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=Getting+ffdshow

It also appears I need either of the following two filters as well:

MP4 Spliiter from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=170665&release_id=400405

3ivx from http://www.3ivx.com/download/windows.html

In some posts, MP4 Splitter is recommended; in others, it is not mentioned but 3ivx is mentioned.

Which one is recommended?  Or am I missing something?

This is a good build.

Either will work. MP4 splitter is free. 3ivx is trialware. You have to pay around $6.95 after 30-day trial.

There are newer versions (the ones that I have been using) of MP4 splitter here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/guliverkli/

m4a files are played either through DirectShow or QuickTime, depending on whether proper DirectShow filters are found on your computer. You can tell whether DirectShow is being used by looking at Playing Now view and see whether Visualization can be displayed. If not, it will say "QuickTime" instead of visualization options.

1. Extract the download in any folder, for example C:\Download\MP4Splitter\Release Unicode\MP4Splitter.ax (use Release Unicode version).

2. Start -> Run, type

regsvr32 "C:\Download\MP4Splitter\Release Unicode\MP4Splitter.ax"

and click OK. You will get a confirmation message box saying registering ... has succeeded.
