Empty NAS?
« on: July 28, 2006, 03:23:18 pm »

Is it possible to buy a NAS without hard drives?  Just the case, power supply, and the electronic guts that make up a NAS?  That way, I could add or swap drives at my convenience.  I already have a lot of drives and don't want to pay for more in a NAS purchase.

Just wondering if this is possible and, if so, what to look at.

Thanks!

Something like this? http://www.tomsnetworking.com/2006/04/04/dlink_medialounge_dsm_g600_wireless_g_network_storage_enclosure/

Edit: I forgot... Google for "NAS enclosure"

Thanks.
I'm in need of one capable of holding multiple drives (3 or 4 would be ideal).  I'm shocked at the prices these things are still demanding.  How much does it really cost to make a case, power supply, castrated CPU and OS?  IMO, a full featured enclosure (sans drives) capable of housing 4 drives shouldn't cost more than $200.  However, prices for something like I've described seem to start around $600.  That's nuts.

This one takes 2 disks http://www.netgear.com/Products/Storage/NetworkStorage/SC101.aspx. Price is around $100.

Just build a PC server - cost you around 200/300  instead of that 6 your talking about.

I've seen plenty of NAS boxes though for pretty cheap, just not massive capabilities for number of drives.
