Burning sub folders?
« on: August 20, 2006, 06:12:42 am »

There must be a simple answer here but I can't find it.

I want to burn a data CD from a folder that contains files and sub folders.

I select the folder in MyComputer and the files list on the right while the sub folders open underneath in the tree so I can't select them for burning.

I select the folder in MyComputer while not opening it and drag the whole thing to 'drop files here' and I end up with the same number of files ready for burning and no sub folders.

In both cases the button that says hide/show files in subfolders changes nothing.

Is there a setting I can't find, or what am I doing wrong?

OK, I've tried and tried and have 5 cds in the bin so far.

I really thougth I'd got it at the 5th attempt.

I've got it set to keep original folder structure,
I've dragged the individual files to the burner,
I've dragged the individual sub folders to the burner

and it will still insist on bunging everything into a top folder on the CD, not what I want, ie all the individual files and the sub folders at the top level of the CD. How am I supposed the use the autoplay if everything is inside a folder?

I thought this was going to be simpler than digging out my old Nero CD!

Well here I am talking to myself again but on the 6th attempt, I have my CD! Courtesy of Win XP's native burning thing. Never thought I'd being saying M$ came to the rescue.

For future reference, how do I go about achieving the same thing in MC?

Also, and just a thought, but if MC is going to show MyComputer in the tree, shouldn't it default to a kind of explorer view and not the same view I have when viewing mp3s?

Happily, I'm not in a hurry anymore, so take your time. I can wait.

Burning subfolders works correctly on my PC.

Did you verify that the intended folder paths show up before burning? (Clik "Details" in Action Window and check the "CD Folder" field.)

When testing you could use a rewritable disc.

You could install the latest MC11.1 version. I don't think it contains changes to CD burning, but sometimes a reinstall can help in odd problems.

Everything looks good in the details pane. It shows the sub folders and burns them. What I can't seem able to do is burn the contents of a folder without the containing folder itself.

Supposing I have this structure:
MyDocuments/Folder1/Folder2/Files and sub folders

I want the contents of Folder2 on a CD

The nearest I got was to open Folder2 in MC and drag the files from the right pane to the burner, then drag each individual sub folder from the tree to the burner. What I get on the CD is:

Folder2/Files and sub folders when what I want is just Files and sub folders.

Am I not seeing the wood for the trees?

I don't think there's a wood.

The folder naming option is not designed to handle partial copies of the existing hard drive folder paths.

It works best if you use a library field based naming scheme. A typical example is [Artist]\[Album]. With the custom option you can define your own rule. You can also combine text strings and library fields, for example: sherb's music\[Genre]\[Album Artist (auto)] - [Album]. If you don't close the disc you can add another session that uses a different rule.

The "Same as original" option works exactly as the name implies. It checks and replicates the complete original folder structure. It doesn't matter how you add the files to the burn queue.

Hopefully JRiver can develop this option further, but I think it works as designed now.

EDIT

However, I don't quite understand this:

Supposing I have this structure:
MyDocuments/Folder1/Folder2/Files and sub folders

I want the contents of Folder2 on a CD

The nearest I got was to open Folder2 in MC and drag the files from the right pane to the burner, then drag each individual sub folder from the tree to the burner. What I get on the CD is:

Folder2/Files and sub folders when what I want is just Files and sub folders.

You should get "MyDocuments/Folder1/Folder2/..." instead of just "Folder2\...".

May be working as it's designed but is it designed for easy data CD burning?

So, I can mess around with paths and fields in MC or I can just open a folder, drag them to the CD icon and have Windows ask me 'do want to write these files?'. Yep. Job done.

Guess who wins.

Thanks, Alex.

Re your edit,

If I drag Folder2 to the burner, I get the full path on the CD

If I open Folder2 in the right pane and drag the files to the burner I get Folder2/Files
