End of evening frustration... I kepy pressing the Update button - 10 times - each time the Failed to Connect message appearing.  Then the last attempt showed, CD not found with the submission dialogue box.

It appears that it may therefore not be the connection or availability of the service, but something wrong with the look-up function.

What time zone is YADB based in?  When does the daily re-indexing start or back-up process run?  Is there an 'expected' unavailability each day?

Nick,
This problem may not be with YADB.  As far as I know it's up and running.  It's possible that something else is going on with your connection or your PC.

We'll double check on Monday.

What build are you running?

Just Wondering

I often wonder how some companies provide A redundent server, where if site 1 goes down that site 2 located in another providers arms can pickup when something happens to site 1 (internal problems or a provider problem).

I have 2 esparate T1 conncetions to the net, and no logged or reported connectivity issues.
Nothing else running on the PC ( that's different over the last year ).  This is a dedicated machine for ripping.  All MS updates applied (which could always be a problem).  McAfee VirusScan v10, build 10.0.27 - I've tried disabling this but it does not seem to have any effect.

If there are other users - avpman, getting the same problem, and your DB servers are not reporting anything suspicious in their logs, then JRiver hosting connectivity may be an issue.

DB redundancy is a somewhat large question - but there is even failover in the openware MySQL...

If there are other users - avpman, getting the same problem,

Two isn't a conclusive number.  More than two people use the same antivirus program, for example.

As I said, we'll double check this tomorrow.

As I said earlier, I was getting the Failed to Connect message with the virus scan software disabled.  What is curious is the fact that after 10 failed attempts, it can return a CD not found.

I'll do some testing of YADB this morning, but in the meantime: if you have problems like this, please note your IP address (open a DOS window and type ipconfig) and the exact time (with timezone) and post it here. Then I can take a look at the logs for useful info.

Hi Nick,

I have no entries at all for the two IP addresses you sent. Could you try again, and this time also enter www.yadb.com into your browser (to make sure I'm not making a mistake...)

Hi Nick.

Something strange is going on. The IP's you gave me are not showing up in the logs. The IPs that ARE showing up (when you accessed that special page I sent you) are different than the ones you gave me, and they change. That page loads several graphics, and sometimes I got one, sometimes 3 different in a single load of the page.

The IPs belong to:
singnet.com.sg
maxonline.com.sg

I could not find a corresponding entry in the YADB logs.

It sounds like your ISP (are you in Singapore) is doing NAT, and the NAT may be blocking YADB.

Today, I looked up 8 CDs, and only had the problem once.  I clicked on your private URL as well.  This was at 18:30 ('ish) Singapore - that's 10:30 GMT.

I have contaced both ISP's who each are 100% certain that they do no filtering, NAT, SpeedLinks, or anything else that may cause this to happen.  As the problem does not happen all the time, I tend to believe them.  If they were using NAT, they would hardly use it just some of the time.

One thing I did notice is that when the Failed to Connect message comes up, the MC screen appears blocked to progress whilst the look up is being done.  I positioned a local screen showing the WAN IP's in the right place on my monitor, then switched to MC and have posted the result as a PM.

Hi Nick,

I checked and found your 10:30 access of the ~gateley page, but again, there is no record of any access in YADB at that time.

I sent you the logs showing that you accessed a single page with more than one IP, so something strange is going on somewhere between your PC and the YADB server...

The problem could exist in the following places:-

1. MC11.1.185
2. Local PC setup
3. LAN/WAN interface (routers, firewalls, switches this end)
4. NAT, Speedlink - ISP go faster techniques (my ISPs)
5. IP routing
6. NAT, Speedlink - ISP go faster techniques (JRiver ISPs)
7. LAN/WAN interface (routers, firewalls, switches JRiver's end)
8. DB host setup
9. YADB DB

On the basis that the problem is intermittent for a number of users, then it would point to 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9.  If it's just me, then 2, 3 or 4.

My ISPs claim to run nothing to interupt possible look up.  Are there any tests that I can run in order to prove this?

And PLEASE, if others are getting Failed to Connect to YADB messages, join this post (!)

Hi Nick,

A big clue is that when you did an access of a page with embedded images, the images were retrieved with different IP addresses (several). Even though your ISPs may be claiming not to do anything that might interfere, the NAT behavior here indicates that they might be doing something they don't know about.

This may not be the cause, but given that YADB works for most of us, it's a good place to look.

The last few days I've been having the same problem as you.  I put in a CD to rip (which I've done about 500 times with success), the usual process takes place of making a connection to YADB, but it just sits on the "Connecting to YADB" dialog for about a minute, then it times out and reports that it failed to connect to YADB.  The first time this happened, I figured YADB must be down, so I waited a couple days and tried again with the same result.  I've also rebooted my system - same result.  >:(

I'm running MC 11.1.130 on Win2K Pro SP3

Proxy?

If a user was using a Proxy could that provide intermittent problems?

trw7 - if that happens again, please try again immediately (right click on the CD, then choose lookup from database). Some queries are just barely too slow for the http timeout, and rerunning them immediately while the data is still in cache will succeed.

King - I don't know, I'm pretty confused. It could be something strange like a redundant system where one of the channels of redundancy is busted but the rest are fine (I've actually seen this).

Same results when right-click and "Update from CD Database" except that it only takes it a few seconds to return with "Failed to connect to the YADB server."  I repeated this several times and it fails every time.  It doesn't matter whether or not my firewall software is enabled or not.  In the past, I've never had this connection problem with exactly the same system configuration.

I hope this gets worked out soon because I hate entering tons of track names.

I am also new and not very computer literate and having this problem as well.  Since I downloaded the trial yesterday I have only had about 10 CD's actually connect to YADB.  I am occassionally connecting.  Help please, before I get frustrated... otherwise, I am enjoying the program very much.

Thank you

ps is there a limit in trial version?

After seeing that someone had been working on YADB, I tried to connect again from MC and now it is working.  Must have been something on their end.  Either they had it down for maintenance or there was some other problem that they fixed.

Hey Nick...

I made a small change that might affect you. While combing  the new logs (I made some changes to help me track down stuff like this), I found a PILE of accesses from IP addresses that might be you. They are all cache addresses, so it could be anyone in Singapore. I've disabled caching on YADB lookups to see if that might be affecting it.

Let me know if it happens again...

Sill having consistent issues here.  Just bought 2 CD's.  First one worked just fine.  2nd one Gave 4 connection failures in a row, waited a few minutes and then it too worked.  This is around 7:45 - 7:50 Central Time.

Hi Bart,

I need a little more info: exact time would help, or IP address. I've got 10 connections during that time period, and none of them come from the same IP address so I can't figure out if any of them are you.

Sorry, didn't note the exact time of the failures, but it would have been between 7:40pm and 7:50pm US Central time with the final success coming around 7:50.  If it happens again, I will make note of a more accurate time.  My IP address is the same one that I am posting from, so if you are a moderator on this forum you should be able to see it.  If not, how do I send a PM?  It's probably staring me in the face, but I don't see a link to do private messages.

We turned off PMs for a few days, due to a security problem. I've got your IP now.

19:37 Successful CD lookup, 1 second
19:50 Successful CD lookup, 1 second
19:57 Add Individual Track, failed, 6 seconds
19:58 Add Individual Track failed, 5 seconds
19:58 Add CD, success, 2 seconds

You looked up a CD at 7:37, it worked.

You lookup up a Johnny Cash CD at 7:50, it worked.

You tried submitting some individual tracks to the DB, they failed to submit, at 7:57.
You tried again at 7:58, still faield.

And you finished by resubmitting the Johnny Cash CD at 7:58.

Did you intend to submit data or were you trying to look it up?

Whilst off work recuperating after a minor operation I decided the time could be well spent ripping all my CDs to FLAC.  It's hard work!

About every third time I try to lookup YADB it fails on connection, and every so often MC crashes. When I restart MC it generally does the lookup OK.  Every time I've tried to make a submission to YADB, MC crashes.

This has been happening over the last 24 hours, but I have had similar problems in the past.

I'm on cable broadband, and don't have any problems with web browsing, mail, etc.

Any suggestions?

Are you running any third party plug-ins?

Under Services & Plug-ins, other than the default plug-ins, I have EQdb but his was installed after the problems started.  I also have had Playing Now 1.3 installed for some months.

Edit: Uninstalled 3rd party plugins, rebooted.  One CD worked OK, next one found a choice on YADB.  On selecting one of options, MC gave the usual message about cannot connect and crashed.  On restarting MC the choice I had made was listed against the tracks.

Hi Nick,

As usual, you are coming from a lot of different IP addresses - I found two that are probably you,
and two that may or may not be you.

The CD you are looking up are hitting the fuzzy match part, and it takes a while. I'll work on this when I get a chance, but in the meantime, when it fails, just wait a minute (I mean 60 seconds, not just a few seconds :) ) and try again.

We turned off PMs for a few days, due to a security problem. I've got your IP now.

19:37 Successful CD lookup, 1 second
19:50 Successful CD lookup, 1 second
19:57 Add Individual Track, failed, 6 seconds
19:58 Add Individual Track failed, 5 seconds
19:58 Add CD, success, 2 seconds

You looked up a CD at 7:37, it worked.

You lookup up a Johnny Cash CD at 7:50, it worked.

You tried submitting some individual tracks to the DB, they failed to submit, at 7:57.
You tried again at 7:58, still faield.

And you finished by resubmitting the Johnny Cash CD at 7:58.

Did you intend to submit data or were you trying to look it up?

Thanks.  Before the 7:50 success, I got 2-3 failures on that exact same CD.  If you don't see any connection attempts then the problem must be between endpoints.  And yes, I intended to submit the CD data since what I pulled down was not 100% accurate.  I first tried by selecting the tracks and it failed (just once as far as I can remember, maybe it sent them in 2 batches).  I then right clicked the CD icon and sent the entire CD sucessfully.

Hi BartMan01,

There were no other attempts between 7:37 and 7:50.

I just tried uploading a small batch of files to YADB, and got the following message at the end of the process.

Are the failures here the same connectivity problem or something else?

Check the genre field, make sure it is filled in (and artist, album and year)
