Be glad at least that it wasn't your family
It's a hell of a lot worse then

If you feel bad, think how they must feel
I feel more sorry for them than Steve - they've had a part of their life ripped out of them and it will take a long time to recover if they ever do
Mainly you just learn to cope with it, but the pain never goes away (at least, not in my experience)
I hope they find a way of coping with it pretty soon, but it's not easily done
Best wishes to them all

The strange part is that it is very unusual for Stingrays to strike, and even more unusual for it to be fatal.  Considering he has dealt with much more dangerous animals, it is shocking.

He always struck me as one who had a love for life.  A lesson we can all learn from.

The first person I thought about was his wife, and how hard it is right now for her. when ever i seen her with her husband they both struck me as being in love with each other and they had a love for life.

My wife asked me why i was crying, and i told he the story. I know it sounds strange, I don't even know him.

Hero? He was mad.

If you take all the risk (like presenting your 4 year old boy to an alligator besides feeding him [not the boy, the alligator]) you have to bear the consequences.

I don't know if his wife allowed this. But at least after the action I (for myself) filed the divorce.

No worries here - some things just hit you right in the guts, and when it happens you have to respond - wether it's crying or punching holes in the wall
Either way you have to do it

Yeah, it kind of hit me hard too. It was always fun to joke about the crazy stuff he would do with seemingly no regard for his safety. It's pretty surreal. The weird thing is that he wasn't even doing anything that crazy (like sticking his head into a freshwater croc nest "just to have a look around").  It was just a total freak accident.

A simple case of the law of numbers. You can cheat death a number of times. But if you keep on trying, sooner or later it'll catch up to you.

I was saddened almost surprised to hear about this, someone with that rare zest for life no longer here. I think its his kids that will have the hardest time, growing up without a father, as well known, can't be that easy.

He died what he loved doing, which is probably preferred over how most people's end comes, slowly.

The people affected most will be his wife and two kids.

They say that a fatal blow from a stingray tail is a one in a million shot, like my girlfriend always says, it was his time to go.

RIP Steve

He's been playing with deadly aligators and snakes for years.
And a stingray is what gets him! Oh the irony

Poor, crazy man  :-[

yes I had a problem with that also.

Today their equivalent to our House\Senate etc.. were talking about him and how they will honor him (put him to rest).

His wife flew in to take control over his body.

this is only the second time someone has died from a stingray from his country. the last being 18 years ago

Or the third... Opinions on the Net differs. Anyway, getting your nuts chewed off by a croc is a lot more likely. At least he didn't go in a silly car accident, or something. That would have been to common for him.

His story reminds me of Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente. Felix was a spanish naturalist who had an acclaimed weekly program on TV in the 60s and 70s and filmed the best documentaries of natural wildlife ever produced in Spain, "The Man and the Earth". All my generation grew up knowing and loving natural wildlife thanks to Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente.

He was filming the "Iditarod", the famous sled dog race held in Alaska, for one of the episodes of "The Man and The Earth" in April 1981, when his small plane crashed into the ground. All 4 people on board, Felix, the pilot, the cameraman and an assistant died in the crash. Felix had said just minutes before taking the plane... "what a wonderful place to die..."

I was 20 when Felix Rodriguez de la Fuente died. I remember I cried when I heard the news.

Some people have the power to enlighten the lives of other people. In their own special way, Steve and Felix are among those people. They lived their lives as they wanted to... and died doing what they loved most.
