If you initialize an iPod, MC does not recalculate the space used
« on: September 09, 2006, 06:07:04 am »

If you initialize an iPod, MC does not recalculate the space used.  You have to shut down MC and restart it to force the recalculation.

This is important if you use more than 50% of the space o the iPod.  MC says you don’t have sufficient space for a sync even though you just initialized the iPod.

Note:  this is not a new problem - it may be that it always worked this way

Did you run a "re-check" sync?  I know that you have to do this when you change the list of files that you're going to sync, but I don't know whether or not it's needed after an initialization.  I can't remember what the behavior was the last time I re-initialized my iPod.

Larry,

I did not think of that.  It would be better than shutting MC down.  I'll try it next time I have to initialize the iPod.  Hopefully I will not have to try it for awhile - the other workaround is still holding up.

I have the same issue as Randy.  On my regular ipod it has never really been an issue because I rarely initialize and re-sync.  On my Nano, however, I end having to close/re-open MC to give the correct space available for sync.  Because the Nano is relatively small (1 GB version) I find that I am changing the playlists that I sync with quite often.  Here is what I am doing:

1. Connect Nano
2. Go into options and change the playlists that I want to sync (I do have it set to delete files that are not in the current sync)
3. Recheck sync.  If previous sync (files which should be deleted) and new sync combine to be more than 1GB, MC states that I am over capacity.
4. Initiallize IPOD.  Recheck sync still incorrectly shows that I am over capacity.
5. Close/Re-open MC...space available now shows correctly.
6. Sync

I have kind of gotten used to closing and opening in order to sync so it is not a big deal to me.  The only times that it has been frustrating are when I spend time manually dragging files over to the Nano only to find out that it thinks I am over capacity...Luckily, I have learned my lesson, and this has not happened for awhile.

This issue has been around for awhile now. I responded to this thread http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=34146.msg233048;topicseen#msg233048 to a user who had similar problems.

We shouldn't have to shut down MC in order to get the iPod to sync.  I have a 1 GB Nano too, and I usually use "Re-initialize" to wipe the Nano clean, then put on an entirely different playlist.

Rick,

Thanks....

It's easy to work around if you know of the problem, but this will help everyone.

Can you post your system and iPod information?

I must have gotten my Ver numbers confused. I installed V11.200 earlier today and it works.

Today was my first chance to "Initialize" my iPod using ver. 200 and I'm happy to report that the space available calculates properly.

Thanks  :)

Hey BullishDad,

Do you have an iPod model A353? Is so, can you post the last three digits of the serial number?

Thanks,
Rick

Yes, more specifically the model is PA353/LL.  The last three digits of the S/N are UPS.
