Keeping MC11 & MC12 Library in Sync?
« on: September 23, 2006, 11:19:12 am »

I know that MC12 picks up new tracks & adds them to the library using the watched folders.   Will this also pick up changes?

The reason I ask is I have both MC11 & MC12.  If I make tag changes using MC11, will these be picked up in MC12?

Actually, this was a dumb question – easy to test.  And watched folders to not catch changes (didn’t expect them to).

So how are people keeping the libraries in sync?  I assume you have to:

1) Pick the master (either MC11 or MC12)
2) Make changes in the master
3) Periodically delete all of the tracks in the library in the other version & re import it.

If this is not the best way, I would appreciate any tips.

BTW – I said delete all tracks in library instead of clear library – I’m assuming if I do a clear I may lose my custom settings (views) and playlists, and …  If I’m wrong I would again appreciate any tips – but I’ve spent a lot of time setting these up so & don’t want to lose it all by doing a test.

Magic_Randy,

you are wrong! If you make tag changes in MC11, they will be picked up in MC12 under the following conditions:
1) Tags are written to files in MC11
2) The option Library>Tasks>Update for External Changes is set

Not sure if 2) is a necessary requirement, in my case it is set.

At the moment I make all my changes in MC11 and let MC12 pick them up.

Thanks for that.  I guess it pays to ask the question.

I tested it – and the change was not reflected.

I tested again after your feedback & it is actually working.  The problem is the timing of the refresh of the data on the screen.  Even when moving around (e.g. in one album, bounce to another, etc…) the changes may not show up.  Eventually they do show up.  I assume there is some optimization whereby if you already read the data, it does not re read it again for performance.

While tag changes are picked up, there is also library information.  I assume these can not be transferred.  The one that I’m looking at is the last played date.  Is there anyway to get this information from the MC11 library to the MC12 library?

Thanks – as the library format is different, I didn’t know you could restore MC12 from MC11 backups.

The only problem with this is the restore also wipes out my smartlists, etc. in MC12 and makes them the same as in MC11.  But at least I get the last played information which is more important.

BTW – what don’t you like in MC12 that requires you to go back to MC11 daily.

In general I like MC12, but it has a few issues that need to be resolved before I can trust it fully.

We have four PCs and all PCs have a copy of the same MC11.1 main database. I started that library in 2002 and I am not going to make it incompatible with MC11.1 yet.

Alex,

Thanks for the info.  I’ve been playing around with managing the library in MC12 and doing some things in MC11 and have concluded that this is too hard.  So for the short term I will manage the library (rip, get lyrics, manage tags, etc.) in MC11.  I will try to do everything else in MC12.

I assume that you'd also need "Enable Watch Folders" checked as well, correct?
