Can I use this workaround with MC12?

SwellGuy,

You may have missed this one due to the Vikings/Bears game.

Any comment?  It looks like the structure of the .xml file is the same.

Yes, you can.

Actually, all my sports fan energy is devoted to the Twins right now. They are, afterall, the best team baseball. I can't believe 162 games went by like THAT!

SwellGuy,

Thanks... Now I can bug you on 2 forums re: making this a standard feature. ;D

I assume the PDT.XML file may change with each BETA release - so I should not have a backup PDT.XML file that I drop in each time I upgrade.  eg. it's safer to just reapply the workaroud each time.  Am I correct?

SwellGuy,

I've been testing the workaround and can’t make it behave the same in MC11 and MC12.  In both cases I’ve made the exact same change to the PDT.XML file (I actually just copy the line and paste it, so I know there are no differences).

In MC11, if I change the lyrics, it is picked up as a change.  So it gets synchronized.

In MC12, if I change the lyrics, it is not recognized as a change.  So it will not get synchronized.

If I change the ratings, it is picked up as a change in both versions.

Following is the section from the PDT file.

<Device>
<Type>3</Type>
   <Vendor>Apple</Vendor>
   <Name>iPod</Name>
   <DeviceID>apple_computer__inc.&amp;ipod</DeviceID>
   <PlaylistBasePath>ROOT</PlaylistBasePath>
   <SupportedFileTypes>mp3;aa;wav;aif;iff;aac;m4b;m4a;m4p</SupportedFileTypes>
     <ChangeKeyExpression>[Rating]\1[Composer]\1[Date Modified]\1</ChangeKeyExpression>
</Device>

Any suggestions? ?

Is there a "[Lyrics]" parameter?  I'm wondering if adding "[Lyrics]\1" to the "ChangKey" line would work, but I have no idea if the syntax would be correct.

Specifying 'Lyrics' won't work. I'm pretty sure I know what the problemis but I haven't had to time to get to it yet. Hopefully, I'll get it fixed today.

Thanks... I see there is a new version .81 available.  I'll see if that works. ;D

SwellGuy

Fixed in 86 ;D

I'm sure this is not on the top of the Beta issues being worked so I really appreciate you getting the fix in.  I do a lot of tag changes, especially to lyrics, so this helps manage the iPods.  The only other option is to do an overnight sync every now and again.

It would still be nice to have this as a standard feature – but I’m sure (hope) that will come in time.

SwellGuy,

Any more thoughts regarding making this a standard fetature or an option?  I'm not sure how people with iPods manage their changes without this.  They must be doing a lot of full syncs.  I have trouble with my 60gb iPod.  Now they are up to 80gb.  Too large to do regular full file syncs just to update tags.

They're probably just not too concerned about changes like cover art or lyrics.

My concern with making it a standard feature is that users might feel that their iPod seems to always require syncing. But, then again, it isn't any more aggressive than iTunes implementation of syncing.

Maybe we'll try it for a few builds to get some feedback.

SwellGuy,

I find the workaround to be very precise.  As an example, this past weekend, I updated ~500 tracks to add & correct lyrics.  There was no method to my madness (not by artist, album, or anything).  I would never have been able to keep track of the changed.  When I did my sync, it picked up these changes.  No more, no less.  I have similar experience when working on my cover art.  Also, the sync, for only these changes, is very fast.  I can make everything perfect in minutes.  The alternative (without using the workaround) requires initializing the iPod and doing an overnight sync.

I do not find this approach to be either overreaching or overly aggressive.  If people are not doing these types of changes, they would not be impacted.  I would still suggest an option as some people may not care about this level of detail on the iPod itself.
