I've been running MC 11 on a P4 laptop for about 5 months without major problems.  I have built a desktop PC with a Core 2 Duo CPU, an Intel DG965WH motherboard, 2 GB of RAM and 2 500 GB SATA drives and an NEC 34500a DVD drive.  I got MC 11.196 installed and registered it with my permanent registration key.  I copied my music files to one of the SATA drives and restored my music library file.  (The drive letter was the same so no change required there.)

I'm still working to get all the drivers loaded.  (No audio outout yet. I haven't located the Microsoft HD audio driver install file yet.)  Audio CDs are not recognized by MC or Win Explorer in the NEC 3550a internal DVD drive but data CDs are recognized and read just fine.

I connected an external USB DVD drive I had used tio rip CDs on my laptop to try out ripping audio CDs to a new_rips library in MC.  MC ripped an audio CD at about 20X in normal mode. 

However, in secure mode MC crashed shortly after displaying a message about determining the drive's cache size. The crash is completely repeatable.


I tried encoding to FLAC and to MP3.  The crash occurs in either case.

  I've appended the system info from MC 11.    The message box with technical details that Win XP displayed  had this info:

NTDLL startup blue screens are typically caused by a virus overwriting that essential file.  For this error, I'm not so sure.

Have you checked for a firmware update for that USB CD burner?  Also, make sure to disable any Packet Writing software (Nero InCD, Roxio DirectCD or Drag-to-Disc, etc) before trying to burn as those applications are notoriously terrible.  Last, but not least, see if disabling any Anti-Virus software makes any difference (and I'd do a full Virus scan just in case Gamer's right).  Also, is this (LITE-ON SOHW-1673SU) the drive?

If that doesn't solve it, you'll also probably want to turn on MC's internal logging and then recreate the error (as the developers might ask to see a copy of the log).  To do this go to Help --> Logging and check the Output to a log file (and check all of the event types).

There is a firmware update for that LiteOn drive available (dated 3/22/2006) here (you have to choose Optical and your model number from the drop downs to get there):

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

- I've gotten audio working.  Sound fine.

- I made a mistake in listing Ntdll.exe.  The module listed was NtDll.dll which is an integral part of Win XP.  Sorry.  This PC has had pretty close to zero exposure so I doubt that this is the problem.

- I tried downloading the firmware update for my Liteon SHOW-1673SU DVD drive but the installer halted with a message thqat the update was for the 1673S model only.  I can't see how to get around this check or whether I should. The firmware data was 3/22/06 so my drive bought in July might be up to date.

I found that the PC hangs during bootup if the USB DVD drive is attched.  I tried Disabling USB Boot but that didn't help.

- No Nero or other CD/DVD writers on this PC yet.  No anti-virus s/w either.

- I got a log file.  The edited tail end is appended to this message.

- I looked at the description of changes from v 197 through 200.  No mention of any relevant changes.  I'll try upgrading at some point but it doesn't seem to be a likely cure.

- I tried Disabling Multi-core support in the BIOS so that the CPU is only using one core.  I'm ripping the 2nd Cd now and no crash so far.

I've been having the same problem on my new computer. I'm using the latest version 11.1.200 and when I try to rip a CD in secure mode I get the same crash as Listener.

I've managed to get it to rip in secure mode by setting the processor affinity for Media Center.exe to one core (CPU0) in the task manager.

It looks as though its a problem with dual core processors... or at least Intel Core Duo processors.

An update on my crash problem:

I've done two rounds of updating drivers for motherboard functions.  Since then I've used that PC to rip about 200 CDs.

The crash I described in my original post

in secure mode MC crashed shortly after displaying a message about determining the drive's cache size

has not reappeared since I finished the driver updates.

I don't have any MC specific problems now.  My internal DVD drive doesn't work, the PC won't boot with the USB DVD drive connected and I've seen two Win XP crashes associated with display updating.

Before the test I thought that my RAM sticks & BIOS settings were fine, but the test made me change my too tight settings.

Was still encountering crashes when forgetting to set processor affinity.  Tracked down latest firmware for CD-RW drive from Samsung.  Have experienced no crashes since updating firmware.

I have this problem on my Dell xps 400 dual core as well.  I have all the updated firmware from Sony and whoever makes the DVD drive.  Only solution I've found is to reset processor affinity as noted above, which seems to work fine in secure mode.  Otherwise it crashes immediately upon starting the rip.
