Ipod Sync'ing Trouble
« on: October 09, 2006, 11:03:39 am »

I am encountering some problems syncing my ipod.  It worked OK in the past, but I have upgraded to build 11.1.200 and the difficulties started.  When I hooked up the ipod, I received the error message:
Your ipod could not be properly identified.
Please check for an updated version of Media Center.
Ipod type: S493, 0, 0

But if I give it a few minutes,  it WILL recognize the ipod and even list the songs & playlists.  I sync the ipod and then eject it.  When I search the ipod, no playlists or songs.  Although the ipod reflects that space has been taken up by the files.

On a hunch, I re-initialized the ipod with iTunes and it has the most current firmware.  THis did not solve the problem. Not sure where to go from here.  Any advice?

Cheers

The latest firmware is causing trouble in identifying iPods.  This is probably your problem.  If you follow the instructions on the attached link, they can help you.

I assume by instructions, you mean that you need the serial number and model. I just posted them on that [and this] thread.

Do I need to wait for the next build for the correction or is there something else I need to do?

THANKS!

Assuming this is the problem, I think you need to wait for the next update.  Without this information J River can't even investigate it.

Please post your system information. Are you running Vista?

Does the S493 support photos?

Yes.  It is the HP version of the ipod 60 gig 4G (longer warranty which I already used!!).  I am not currently using the photo feature, though.

In the help menu, click "Check for Updates" it will probably tell you no updates are available but it will update your portable devices database. After updating, restart MC. Let us know how this turns out.

Thanks,
Rick

I did as you indicated.  The error message went away, but the sync'ing problem still exists.  MC still shows all the play lists and songs when the ipod is attached.  When i eject the ipod, it does not show any of the songs or playlists.

I also sync'ed it again when I had it hooked up.  No problems were indicated.  Any ideas for a next step?

You may have to initialize it (in MC) and test with a small set of files. It's possible the database is corrupt due to not properly identifying it earlier.

For the life of me, I cannot recall how to initialize the ipod.  I though you could right-click to get the command, but I cannot find it.

The mind is the first thing to go...

It should be in the right-click menu for the iPod listed in the tree. If it's not there, MC isn't seeing your device as an iPod. You may have to go to handheld options and select "Redetect all Devices".

Also, turn on handheld logging from the help menu and post it here so we can verify that MC is correctly identifying the iPod.

You were correct that it did not recognize it as an ipod.  I had to reformat under itunes again to allow it recognize the device.  I am still trying to load my files.  I will let you know when it is done and if successful.

This worked, although I am still struggling with slow download times.  But good to have it working again.

Thanks for the help.
