Lyrics Finder - From JRiver
« on: October 06, 2006, 11:44:32 am »

Does JRiver plan on providing Lyrics Finding functionality?  Similar to what is now being done for cover art.

Many of us are dependent on plug-ins, such as KingSparta’s Lyrics Finder, that are not compatible with MC12.

If there is a clear statement from J River, KingSparta and others will know if it is even worthwhile to try to upgrade these plug-ins.

No, I'm just lazy.  I rip CDs almost every week.  Sometimes 500 tracks or so.  With your plug-in I can download the lyrics in minutes.  If I had to look them up one by one it would take a long time.

For now I use your plug-in in MC11, and everything else in MC12.

I think we should really get an answer from J River.

Good idea but I'm too lazy to start a union.

We need to get auto lyrics somehow, whether it's J River providing it, King's plug-in support for MC 12, etc. My track info has Lyrics prominently displayed and whenever I import new files now it's a pain if I don't switch to MC 11 to get the lyrics for them. We have a great Lyrics Editor, now we just need the Finder.

My guess would be that they don't want to get sued (or more likely, threatened to be sued).  Lyrics-providing sites, by definition, violate ASCAP copyright on the songs they distribute the lyrics to (unless they've obtained permission from each and every artist they provide lyrics for).

Recently, companies have been going after authors of software that even provide an interface to obtain lyrics available elsewhere even when the software doesn't "host" those files itself (such as PearLyrics linked-to above).  It is certainly dubious whether or not a lawsuit against this type of software would be successful, but often the threat of a lawsuit is enough to quash the activity.

Sad, but true.  I personally think the "infotainment" industry is completely out of control with these lawsuits against their own customers.  How does distributing lyrics so that your customers can better enjoy their purchases hurt your business?

Either way... I wouldn't count on JRiver offering anything similar.  If you don't like it, write your congressional representatives and join the EFF.

Write your Senator

Electronic Frontier Foundation

If you're not American.... I'm really sorry that we have such stupid leaders and laws and that it always affects you.   :-[

It would not be a "Site"

Either was PearLyrics...

It was a software widget that did essentially what Doof's plugin does.  It searched the web on common lyrics sites (unaffiliated with the authors of PearLyrics) and downloaded the lyrics directly into iTunes.

Like I said.  If they fought the Cease and Desist, analyses I've read indicate that there's a fair chance they would have won.  Of course, it would have cost them thousands and thousands of dollars to fight, and the author was giving the widget away for free, so...   ::)

EDITED: To be more ANAL.

Sorry... IANAL.

I do pay attention to copyright-law related things intently though, as you all probably well know.   ;D

Here's a letter written by an EFF lawyer to the record company that sent the Cease and Desist letter: http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/archives/004246.php

Another EDIT:

It looks like the record companies might be finally seeing the light a little (though they appear to still be squinting and trying to block it out).  pearLyrics might return eventually, but only if it accesses only a industry-controlled, licensed lyrics site.

As long as that site is complete and free to access, I don't think anybody's ever asked for anything more. I think the majority of the lyrics sites out there are only there because no official site existed.

I'd bet that people would even be willing to pay a reasonable fee for lyrics (not me personally). And when I say reasonable I'm talking like $.01 per lyrics. If you have to pay $.99 for the song (which, IMO, should come with lyrics already if they don't already), you probably wouldn't be willing to pay much for the lyrics that go with it. I mean, let's be honest. You're really only seeking conveinence. Lyrics aren't anything you couldn't enter in yourself while listening to the song, unlike the music file itself, which would be nearly impossible to recreate on your own. Charge too much for lyrics and you're back to a ton of lyrics sites of questionable legality.

I agree, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I could certainly be wrong, as I'm just talking out my ... erm ... lower orifice, but... I'd be willing to bet that whatever site they set up will charge a licensing fee.  I doubt they'll charge the "end users" directly, but they'll probably charge a fee to software developers (people like Doof and JRiver) to license software that will access the site directly.  I'm thinking they'll set up something similar to Gracenote/CDDB.

Then, they'll leave it up to the developers to try to recoup that cost (via charging, advertising, losing money, or whatever).
