Windows Media V9 error message
« on: October 23, 2006, 08:55:45 am »

I do not know why this keeps popping up, but I get an occaisional Pop-Up dialog:

"Confirm Action: Windows Media v9 is nto installed on the system. Do yu want to download and install it now?"

I do not have any windows media format files and do not wish to install Windows Media v9 or any other version.
Can I shut this off?
What is triggering this to appear, I have not seen it until recently.

The message is displayed if you try to play a Windows Media track, or try to encode into Window Media format, and you do not have WM installed.

What were you doing when you got this message?

I assume the typos are yours.

I don't think that's our error message.

Well, I'd normally agree, but when I went to Task Manager and right-clicked on the Dialog Window and selected Go To Process, guess where it led?
MC12, so I posted here.

When it pops-up next time I will try to find out more info

and yes that was my typo . . .  nto = not and yu = you

It is our message.

The message is displayed if you try to play a Windows Media track, or try to encode into Window Media format, and you do not have WM installed.

What were you doing when you got this message?

I have no Windows Media files.

It has happened a few times during various activities, mostly browsing within MC and/or tagging files (mp3, flac).

WM files exist on almost every computer. Don't you have some sample wm files that come with Windows?

Check your Auto import folder and see if there are some wma, asf, etc. files that in the folder or its subfolders.

This may be completely unrelated, but I installed MC 11.1.201 on one of our PCs yesterday. MC's installer tried to download the WM package. The PC is a new Acer laptop with XP SP2 Home. I had already installed all current updates from MS including the latest WM codecs for WMP10, but not any beta versions like WMP11.

EDIT

I'll try later if MC12 tries to do the same. (I didn't allow MC11.1 to download the package.)

I always try to deny it as well.

I may have found the cause . . . . it seems there were several WMV files included with an eBook as a tutorial, they were imported without my being aware, thus triggering the message window.

I think the problematic WM version is still in beta (comes with WMP11 beta). AFAIK, a standard Windows XP or WMP10 update lookup does not offer to install it.

MC12 tried to install the WM95 package as well. I guess I already have a later version of WM95 installed and MC does not recognize it correctly.

I denied access and the installer displayed this:
