OT - Firefox 2.0 Final Released (Sorta)
« on: October 23, 2006, 12:52:27 pm »

The official release date is tomorrow, but if you want to jump onboard a day early the official release build of Firefox 2.0 is available today.  You can grab it here:

http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/2.0/

This build is identical to RC3, so if you already have that, and it is installed as Firefox and not Bon Echo, you can just stick with what you have.  I've been running nightlies, which install as Bon Echo, so I updated to this release.

There's a bit of a discussion about it here:

I dislike how they took away the X on the right side of the tab bar and replaced it with one on each tab.  They should have both.  It is nice to be able to leave your mouse over that one X and then just leave it, clicking repeatedly after verifying you can close each tab.  My workaround is to just use Ctrl W..works well enough.  I think the interface, which was actually hired out professionally (Inside the Net, twit.tv podcast) seems like a laugh.  It's the standard, every day user interface that not only has the same layout as the old version, but just has a few color updates and shiny effects added.  But I do like an update, no doubt about it!  I especially like inline spellcheking --oops, caught that!

I agree about both, i like X's on individual tabs, but the one X to close a bunch.

I didn't think the Interface changed much at all!!!

I also used to have an easy button, a mini-tab to the left, to open a new tab.  Now it is a right click I guess.

A warning to some upgraders, you may loose a bunch of Extensions in the short term until they are upgraded to work with FF2.

Try this, might work:

"about:config", find "browser.tabs.closeButtons" and set it to "3"

A warning to some upgraders, you may loose a bunch of Extensions in the short term until they are upgraded to work with FF2.

Most of the extensions I use have already been upgraded to work with Firefox 2.0 builds.  However, if you have one that hasn't, it's fairly likely that you can force it to work by telling it to ignore the compatibility checks.  You can do this using the Nightly Tester Tools extension.  Install it, and then, if you find an extension that won't install:

  • Go to Tools -->Add Ons --> Nightly Tester Tools --> Preferences.
  • Switch to the Add-ons "tab".
  • Check "Disable add-on compatibility checking."
  • Install the extension and restart the browser.  Assuming it starts up okay, then go back into the
  • Add-ons manager and re-enable the compatibility checks (there will be a yellow bar at the top of the dialog that lets you easily re-enable them).
  • Then, select your new extension.  It'll have a Exclamation mark on it's icon because it isn't compatible (so is disabled).  Right click and you'll have a new choice called "Make Compatible".  Choose it and it'll ask you to confirm.  Say OK and you'll be all set.

If at any time during this process Firefox refuses to start up, simply start it in "Safe Mode" and disable the extension as it's really, really not compatible (as opposed to just thinking it isn't which is usually the case).  To do this you can simply go to Start --> Mozilla Firefox --> Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode) (or use the firefox.exe -safe-mode command line switch).  Then it'll start for you (safe mode disables all the extensions) and let you get into the Add Ons manager to uninstall the trouble extension.

I've used this process for a quite a few extensions throughout the nightly builds process, and rarely had issues.  Generally, the more simple extensions (like this one, one of my favorites), work without issue.

Or you can download the extention to your desktop, unzip it with winrar, and change the Maxversion on the install to 2.1, zip it back, and open it with FF,

Worked great with Faster Fox.

It looks like that adds the one X but I want the one X AND an X on each tab.  Since they have more than just T/F (0/1), they should just add more numbers.

there is an extension called Tab Mix Plus that allows some different combinations and options, including having close tabs on each tab AND off to the right, which is how I prefer.
