Better compression for library server
« on: November 04, 2006, 04:37:14 am »

Hi everybody,

currently MC uses zip compression for the library server.
My DB is actually compressed to 7 MB...
converting this archive to 7-zip the size is reduce to 50%!!

7-zip is free available, so it would be possible to upgrade the library compression to this new algorithm for MC 12!

Please think about adding 7-zip compression to the library server!

Thanks a lot
Raist

P.S. I asked for this already in MC11 beta stage, but it was postponed. Hope it will do it into MC12!

MC12 Uses Development Tools From DynaZip That Are Compatible With Most Zip Compressions. Microsoft Also Has Signed A Contract With DynaZip To Include It In Windows Xp And Windows 2003 Server.

The Version That MC12 Uses Is 4.0.0.4 I think It Was Released In 2000, The Current Version Is 6

DynaZip Has Very Good Tools For Developers

It Is Also Important For Users To Have Access To Outside Tools And To be Compatible With Many Tools That Allow For Unzipping Without Needing The User To Buy A New Tool To Manually Uncompressed Zip Files. Compatibility Maybe A Reason JRiver Has Not Updated The DynaZip Tools And For The Increased Compression It May Not Be Worth Moving To A New Control.

WinZip 11 Is Going Into Beta Soon As With Winzip 10 It Offers Higher Compression But With That Compression You Lose Some Compatibility. I Paid My Upgrade Fee (11.95 Winzip Upgrade Assurance) And Also WinRAR But Not Everyone Wants To Shell Out Money Every Year Just To Stay Compatible.

7-Zip Would Need To be Compatable With The Major Tools Like WinZip, WinRAR And Windows XP Built In Zip Tools (I Am Not sure They Are)

I don't care except:

If there is a requirement for something other than zip tools I think this is a problem.

Why would such a compatibility be necessary??

7-zip libraries are free available so I guess they could be added to any software, no?
7-zip can be extracted with a lot of tools like winrar....
