what's the sorting logic for photo albums on an ipod?

At first, it appeared to be [file name] (a-z) which works fine as the camera numbers the files incrementally, and so they show in the correct sorting order on the ipod.

But...

Either it's not as simple as that, or there's a bug, because an album consisting of photos taken over an entire day is being sorted by:

After midday shots, [file name]
followed by before midday shots, [file name]

which surely can't be right, so I need some help to understand what's going on. is it a 24hour format thing, I wonder?
