loosing my mind with id3v 2.3 and id3v 2.4...
« on: November 28, 2006, 03:38:02 am »

Hi all

i have finally (i think..) got to the bottom of my whole tagging ordeal in the past 2 months. i am a Huge JRiver fan and user but alas i use linux alot during the daytime (at UNI) and at home (HTPC). since of course there is no MC for linux (yet..one can dream ;)..) i use Amarok when i am using Linux. A while ago i noticed that alot of my tags (which i labored on for along time- a few weeks of work!!) started after a while of using amarok (3-4 months) to disappear (album art, lyrics etc...). At first i though it was Amarok's fault since i noticed that when i change even the slightest thing in the Tags the tags are ruined in MC and the image stored inside the file is lost...BUT...Today i think i finally began to understand some of the problem after this post in the Amarok Forum:

"...Amarok does NOT delete any of your tags. Here's what really happens: Amarok writes ID3 V2.4 tags, which some other players can't read, due to outdated tagging libraries. These players can only process ID3 V2.3., hence they don't see the 2.4 tags."

So the question is a)is that right and how can i test it b)will JRiver ever move to ID3 v2.4? c)what should i do in the meantime..LOL...

any help would be highly appreciated!

Thx

Zeltak

I guess this is not a simple issue.

From the MC11.1 changelog:

Quote
11.1.136 (3/2/06)
16. NEW: Media Center supports ID3v2.4 tags

11.1.137 (3/3/06)
2. Changed: MC saves using ID3v2.3 for greatest compatability. (2.4 still supported for reading)

Here's a discussion about these changes:

I just tried ID3v2.4 (UTF-8) and it looks like MC does not recognize the APIC tag in this format (APIC = embedded cover art)

tnx for the answer AlexB!

its said in the 11.1.137 changelog that it supports reading of 2.4 files..yet as you also noticed it cant see the image file nor the lyrics ans other stuff..i havnt tried beta 12 yet...is there any change there? does it write 2.4 tags? what is my best strategy then...let amarok "ruin" that is write all files to 2.4 format and hope for a brighter future within MC concerning 2.4  ;D?

thx again

It may also be possible that Amarok does not support multi-line comments. MC uses these for its proprietary tags. Many programs destroy these comments in a way or another even though they are perfectly "legal" according to the ID3 standard.

However, this should not affect the lyrics tag. MC writes lyrics to the standard USLT tag (= Unsynchronised lyric/text transcription) and supports reading USLT from ID3v2.4 UTF-8 (I just tried it).

Does MC Destroy Multiple Image Tags Since MC Only Supports One Image?

I Never Really Checked.

I would not like to store several big cover art scans inside each audio file. However, the additional APIC frames should be preserved if they already exist.

Many Would, I Included (Front And Back) Covers.

and

If You Got A Huge Image In The Art Folder, A Setting To Limit The Size Of The Image Put into the Media File. 125x125, 300x300, 500x500. So MC Would Resize the huge Image And Put It In The File If It Was Too Huge (Per your Settings).

I store them outside (in the album folders) and import to the library.

My cover scan sets are meant to replace the orginal artwork that goes to a storage room with the CD after ripping and scanning. I keep a separate smaller image for standard cover art display and use the big scanned images like any other image files in my library.

A few examples of my scans.

Since 250,000 Of My MP3's Are Old Radio Shows, And Downloadable To Users, That Would Not Work.

Many Users Also Do Not Want To Deal With Lose Files.

wow...this is getting confusing.. ;D...is this a blue ray Vs H-DVD thing... ;) i really cant understand why there are so many formats to mp3 idv2....so i see that there is no real solution...if i let amarok write the tags over i wont be able to use it in MC properly and if i use MC in other programs (including amarok) it wont be able to read some of the tags lyrics...wow talk about frustration..

Yep

zeltak Many programs don't cross talk

MC i think does it's best to preserve.

Id3v2.4 is no major event, and most players do not support writing it. i think Id3v2.4 is actually like 5 Or 6 years old.
