Toolbars
« on: November 29, 2006, 04:16:32 am »

hey, its me again.
Loads of posts i know and probably thinkin *go away already*.
Just been using it loads right now so finding alot of areas with whatever.

One small question - is there any way to customise the text on the toolbar or change it at all for us?

[img=http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/2982/menubarsqj3.th.jpg]

As you can see in this image, some of the toolbars have REALLY long text which means I cant fit that many things on the toolbar.
If it was shorter I could get alot more things on the toolbar.

If there's no way for us end users to change it, could you possibly consider re-wording it then in the program?

List Style: Album Thumbnails - seems a bit long winded for a toolbar.

i asked about it before. as far as i know there is no way to change it yourself. i think the list style: etc is not only long winded, but imo looks a bit dumb.

Of course, you can turn the text off completely and just use the icons.

Of course, you can turn the text off completely and just use the icons.

Then you're not able to see what list style: you are clicking :D

I've always had the text turned off. The tooltips show whatever I need to see.

You could also split the stuff up between the upper and lower toolbars if you really need the text.

I use the List Style: Toggle List Style button on my toolbar for this reason (and it's better than having 3 different ones).

I also have a handful of "named" (with text turned on) buttons on my top toolbar, and the majority of my buttons "unnamed" on the bottom one.

so does this mean theres no way to customise it?
I've seen language translations for MC, would it be possible for me to make say an 'Short Names' language and change the wording in this to give me shorter names?

Icons just are a slower solution for me as you have to hover and wait for a tooltip instead of instantly going to where you want (i always have text showing for programs - firefox, ie, etc)

If this isn't possible thats fine, just wanna make sure before I give up on it.

thanks and sorry for goin on :)

i prefer 3 buttons. although that is apparently not the smartest choice. and i like to use  icons only when the image tells me something. but i can have up 5 icons that look exactly the same but do different things.

i think it is a bit of a strange discussion isnt it. it was more or less a request to get that list style away, because of the real estate and because it looks a bit overdone/dumb. nobody disagreed with that so far.

Hey again :)

I looked at all the language files in the MC install dir and it seems pretty straight forwards.
I've started editing one to rename the toolbar wording to shorter texts and its working great.

The one thing I cant figure out though is:

'List Style: Thumbnails'
'List Style: Album Thumbnails'
etc

I cant find this string at all in the language file and I want to edit it to remove 'List Style'.
Could anyone guide me in the right direction?

thanks alot

Agreed.  However, I'm just happy the new icon looks something remotely like the function the button does though.  Much better than MC11's icon!

nice idea, with the language files. but i think you should give up. it is possible to get ' list style'  away in the registry. but taking these two words away make the buttons unusable. so apparently it goes deeper into the program then one would expect.

Remember that you can quickly change list styles (and sorting, etc.) by mousing-over the name of the view in the view header of any view.

also, I find that atm, the list style toolbar buttons only work when the list has focus. I removed mine in favour of Matt's suggestion above.

Matt, as you mention "(and sorting, etc.)", is there any chance the sorting presets from "customise current view" could be made available from that header view menu too?
