I have a media PC with my family pics on it.  I would like to organize them by using the tags, but it is MUCH easier for me to do the tagging on my laptop.  If I use my laptop, will the pics retain these tags (events, people, places, etc.) if I transfer them to my media PC?  I don't really want to copy the library (assuming that will work?).  I keep my laptop streamlined in terms of mp3s, so if I replaced libraries I would lose all of the changes I had done to my media PC.  All I really want is to copy my pics folder over the network when finished and import them so the tagged images would be added to the media PC.

Also, are there 'standard' tags that would appear in any image program?  I have tinkered with IPTC (?) and keyword features in other programs, but I can't seem to find one that is cross-platform.  I know EXIF is, but it is data recorded by the digital camera.
