Somebody want to build a Logitech G15 plugin?
« on: December 13, 2006, 06:49:56 pm »

The logitech G15 keyboard has an LCD display built-in, with four dedicate buttons that can be used to control the display. It's a popular keyboard with gamers, and audio enthusiast, because it includes lighted media keys, and user-made "applets" that let you control and display supported media players such as Windows Media Player, Real Audio, Itunes, ects. While gaming, or using other full screen software, the keyboard display can be used to view song information, and to control the player. Logitech has made and SDK kit available for programmers wanting to include an "applet" with their applications to make use of this keyboards abilities. I own a G15, and they are quite remarkable. I am not a programmer, or I would of built an applet for MC as quickly as I could of written the code. Maybe a programmer here also owns a G15, and could make an applet for MC? Anyway, if your not aware of what this keyboard is, or can do, check it out. If you ever buy one, you might find it hard to ever go back to a normal keyboard again.

I have a G15 keyboard as well and I really enjoy seeing the song information displayed on the LCD panel.  This would be a wonderful addition if support could be added for Media Center as well through a plug-in.

I also would absolutely love it if somebody could create this.  I have the G15 and it is awesome in WMP.  It shows the media info on the LCD and you can control it from within a game.  However, the media controls don't work with JRiver Media Player.  I might have to investigate programming just to see if this is something I could do.  I highly doubt it though.  Anybody here know how to program in C++ ?  It would be highly appreciated.

P.S.
My only other option right now is to use Microsoft Media Center!!!   :P :o  ::) :-X

I don't own a G15.  But if one were to show up on my doorstep  :) or if I could find one cheap, I would be willing to help put something together.  What would you be looking for?  Song title, artist on the display?  Next, Pause/Play, Stop, that sort of thing with the buttons?

Idealy, yes.  Just like what windows media player shows (alblum/aritst/time que).  Then for the buttons to work.  As it is, this keyboard does not even recognize Media Center.

Looks like the new version of Media Center 12 (just downloaded it) supports the media buttons.  Still no LCD display though.

I hesitated a lot on the G15 but I didn't buy it. Such a plugin would make me reconsider my decision.
What I'm really looking for is a keyboard that allows me to rate songs while playing. I tried to configure some keys of my old one to run batch files and send commands to MC, but it takes me out of the game and switches to the desktop :(
Any suggestion to do that ? This could probably be done with the G15...

The keys are already working :D

The only code really needed is for the track title and artist

I'm Willing to donate for this  :-*

What does a car have to do with this !

Nothing worse than off-topic forums.

I look forward to hearing from a developer :)

Has anyone done this?

I have taken delivery of an XPS M1730 laptop with a logitech LCD screen inbuilt and I would like MC info displayed.

If not then I guess I'll take a look at the weekend.

Are you sure this isn't a totally different animal? Or is it supposed to be like a G15 keyboard on a laptop?  I'm not familiear with the M1730

The Dell XPS M1730 contains a logitech LCD screen and from what I have been reading it uses the same API as the gaming keyboards.

Bump for greater justice! I would really love to see G15 support in MC!

Here's a link of a plugin based, open-source library that can do that job, if someone can code a plugin to make it MC compatible.

The post is old already, but since it has no replies or anything, i try again:P

Spent a few hours trying to build something. But it fails to display anything with the virtual G15.
Could someone please give it a try and tell me if something happens?

Thanks a lot.

Forget it. Considering that no one showed any interest in it I moved that project to the dust bin.

I found the mce plugin in lcd studio but something is still misssing, because when i drag any data onto the display editor from mce plugin, nothing shows.~

works fine for other plugins so IDK why its not working.

havent worked out how to load onto kb yet or display mc(vista) but i hope that it points someone in the right direction. ;)

i think mc just has to send the plugin the data in some way, but im not sure how to check why it isnt as ive only just opened lcd studio and learning that at moment.

I imagine making a Jmc plugin for lcd studio would be the easiest option, anyone can use it to make most other types of custom data displays via plugins.

http://www.lcdstudio.com/site20/download.php

looks like its the only plugin i cant get to work, cant find anyone else who has vista mc plugin working yet but if i would switch media centre if it allows me to use lcd display.

if anyone has any luck let me know plz.

Or u may have more luck requesting someone make a plugin on lcd studio forum which would be better as it would allow u to display data from other apps on same display.

I have the  Z10 speakers and might give this a go.  It does look like an LCDStudio plugin would be the easiest way to do it.  I will let you know if I make any progress.

So, I have something working pretty well in LcdStudio.  I just need to fix a Vista permissions issue (I'm trying to get help from their forum) and I will post it.

That would be great!  I've had this quandery for quite a while now but never had the know-how to do it (or the patience to learn).

I am still waiting to hear from the developer on the LcdStudio forum but I may be out-of-luck on Vista.  For it to work, you need to run MC as an administrator which raises some different problems.  I may just break down and write an MC plugin that works directly with the Logitech LCD Manager software.

Well, I have XP still, which I'll eventually upgrade to Win7.  If you can run it from Xp, cant we run the LCD program in compatability mode in Vista or W7 (that is if you even have a copy of Xp available to dev on)?

I don't have XP but I assume it will work fine on there.  The problem is that LcdStudio runs with adminstrator privileges which can't be changed (other than by the developer) and so MC has to be run as an administrator so they match and a "connection" can be made.  I can post what I have so far if people want to try it on XP.

That would be cool.  So the only problem is making sure that the program is running as "administrator?" Seems like such a small hiccup!  Most computers have admin privlages anyways so it would be a problem for a small group of people... and I would think that the demographic of people using a G15 keyboard would be gamers smart enought to give themselves admin privliges... :)  There might be more to it than that I suppose.  I really dont know.

In Vista even if you have administrator privileges that is different than running a program "as an Administrator".  You can set it to always run a program as such but it is almost like switching users.  This means you will have different settings in MC and in my case it can't see my mapped network drive.  There might be a way around the network drive problem but I would rather not have to.

I gave up on LcdStudio and wrote a plugin that interacts directly with the LCD Manager software:
