Should real media conversion work?
« on: December 19, 2006, 11:49:39 pm »

rm to mp3 conversions worked a few builds ago but now they don't. I get told I may need to install direct show filters to decode this type of file yet they play just fine in MC.

When MC plays the files, you need to check which engine is playing it. Do you see graphical analyzer jumping in the file info area? If not, you are playing it in Real engine, in which case you can not convert. You need RealMedia Splitter and decoder filters in order to play them in DirectShow, and convert them.

Installing the Real media splitter did the trick. Thanks.

But the fact remains that an earlier (to me, right after you opened the beta wider) v12 build did convert rm, without the splitter installed. I didn't install/uninstall anything 'Real' inbetween builds. I never could convert in v11 so I figured this was a new feature. I also knew that Streambox ripper got sued out of existence so when the feature went away i thought it was for legal reasons.

I was/am using Real Alternative and that has a RealMediaSplitter.ax file in its folder as well... Same version, too.

Maybe it worked because of RealAlternative, and stopped working for some reason, such as the splitter filter getting unregistered somehow.

I'm glad it's not an MC bug. I very glad I can now convert that occasional rm file faster and better than Streambox did. MC rocks.
