license question
« on: December 24, 2006, 01:23:28 pm »

Is it possible/legal to lend my license to my brother for the time I am not using it?

I have made a switch to Linux and I cant get Mediacenter 12 to work in Wine. Maybe its possible but Linux has alternatives that work good enough for the time being.

I am sure that if I decide to go back to windows again he will buy his own license, or I will buy a new one but for now I figured lending it out to a family member would be a good solution.

We don't allow the license to be transferred.  Sorry.  Thanks for asking.

Your brother could use MC on a trial basis for 30 days.

There have been a few posts on Wine here and I believe it did work.

No problem. It's his loss ;)

He has been using it for a week or two, he likes it and I'm pretty sure he'll get his own license sooner or later.

Concerning Wine, from what I figured out it worked on versions before 11 and 12. If anyone has some solid info on getting a recent version working please share  :P

Above blog reports success with 11.1. I haven't been able to replicate the success mentioned in this blog - but that could be because I haven't spent enough time on the problem. Also, changing versions of Wine, winetools, internet explorer etc. also cause various issues.

Vmware Server is a free download. I run a couple of Windows programs that way. Not the quickest way but quick enough for MC12 and those few others.
