Ratings sync on iPod
« on: February 01, 2007, 03:21:20 am »

I really like the fact I can use my iPod to rate tracks then MC updates my library when I next connect my iPod.  But... does this mean that if I have a track on my iPod with no rating then I add a rating using MC... this rating will be erased when I reconnect my iPod i.e. the iPod rating will always update the MC rating?  Or is there some timestamp that is checked so MC keeps the latest one?

I believe it works as you hope.  Have you found something different?

Interesting I have reported this exact same problem.  I upload some songs on the ipod nano then rate a few of them in MC then resync and the ratings are lost.

The rule for updating the rating for matching files from the iPod to MC is as follows:

IF the MC file has not been modified since the file was transfered to the iPod AND
IF the iPod rating is not 0 AND
IF the iPod rating is not equal to the rating for the file in MC

(risingdamp - This means that your new MC rating will not be overridden by the iPod rating since the MC file has been modified (when you changed the rating) since it was transferred to the iPod.)

That's the theory - we're looking for problems with the execution of this, particularly where caching files is involved.

Stay tuned...

datdude,

We can't reproduce the ratings problems you're having.

Is this what you are reporting?
- File was rated (4 stars) in MC
- File was synced to the iPod, iPod disconnected
- iPod rating of file (3 stars) doesn't match new MC rating (4 stars)
- Re-connect iPod, play stats (ratings) are transferred back to MC, rating for file in MC is overridden by iPod rating (3 stars)

Are the files getting transferred? Are the files converted/cached?

Not exactly.

"- iPod rating of file (3 stars) doesn't match new MC rating (4 stars)"

It does in fact match the rating after the initial sync and I know this because the only way to rate these songs was to go to the ipod find them and then rate them what I wanted them to be.

After verifying the ratings were the same after the initial sync, I then rate the song in MC and then re-sync immediately without doing anything on the ipod in between.  What happens is the rating from MC is reverted to what it was on the ipod.

I am not doing any caching or conversions.  All of my files are VBR MP3s.

I'm seeing similar problems. When you say "modified", do you mean the actual file itself, or the files MC database info?

I ask because MC defaults to saving the rating tag inside the file, but I've turned that off here. For me, ratings are only saved in the database. Could that be causing problems?

You know what, that might be it.  I was saving ratings to the tag, but stopped that like a month ago.  I will have to test later tonight.

Hey thanks everyone for your help with this.  I haven't had chance to test this because I've been away a lot but as soon as I can I'll report back.

Changing from the database to the tags seems to have made it better.

thanks dd.

I'm hoping this can be fixed because I really don't want the [rating] tag to be saved inside the file.

For some reason MC decided to detect my iPod as a new device and now when I sync it it will not update the MC library with all the ratings I've added to the iPod over the last few weeks.  Worse still all these ratings have now been cleared off the tracks on the iPod.  Why has this happened?

Same here.  At the very least this should be added to the wiki.
