64 bit support - Unrealistic?
« on: January 16, 2007, 09:46:50 am »

Hi all.

Well, Windows XP x64 has been around for a while, MS Vista is coming in 32 and 64 bit and requires more ram. More ram equals better performance and thus going to 4 gig is great. I use 4 gig on a QX6700 so I am vista 64 bit ready.

Question: Does/Will MC support 64bit OS's?

Question: If not, will MC support x32 WOW (and work well) on 64 bit OS's?

Cool beans. looking forward to answers.  ;D

I believe that some people have been using MC with Windows XP64 already for some time.  It's unlikely that MC would be the problem with 64-bit.  However, lots of the "support apps" and drivers aren't anywhere near ready for prime time.  For example, one place that is lagging terribly is graphics card drivers.  Another is directshow codecs and filters (such as FFDSHOW).

I'd be careful before switching to Vista64.  Check this out: http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=36938

I think J River Said They Have Done Some Testing With Vista...

There Have Been Some Reports About Sound Problems, Not Sure What The Results Were.

Also Note It Will Still Be Running In A 32bit Since Vista Is Both 32 And 64 Bit, Like Windows 95 Was Both 16 Bit And 32 Bit.

And That MC12 Is Compiled As 32 Bit.

I Am Wondering If In MC13 We May See, A Vista 64bit Compile And Would It Be Worth Having It Compiled In 2 Flavors.

I Personaly Would Want To Turn Off All 32bit Compatability If I Could So Vista Would Run At Peak Performance.

That Maybe Just A Dream Of Mine However.

We've tested MC 12 quite a bit on Vista.  It works well.

We may make a native 64-bit compile in the future.  There's not a clear advantage right now since Win64 runs 32-bit apps as fast as 64-bit apps, and we never take anywhere near enough memory to overflow a 32-bit pointer.

64-bit vista will be great.  After about 2 years.  You need 64-bit drivers for everything on your system.  Then, if apps aren't compiled for 64-bit they run through a sort of emulation. And some won't run right.  The single biggest benefit of windows is the support for millions of programs.  You lose some of this.

64-bit will be great for workstations and industrial-strength apps, but for the common user, we are still about 2 years away.

Maybe Longer.

I wish I could afford Visual Studio My Self, And Most Can't As A Hobby, And Then Shell Out A Wad For The Version That Will Produce A 64bit Compile. Thats More Than I Spend On My Yugo In spare Parts That JimH Gave Me For Christmas 6 Years Ago.

Been using x64 Pro for two years with; here's a list of what I am using if it helps. I run MC rather smoothly with FFdshow (finally). No burning or ripping issues.

soundcards:
EMU 1212M
EMU 0202 USB

printers:
HP 3102
Canon MP600 (even have cd printing working on x64)

drives:
(2) Lite-On DVD/CD SHW-1635
(1) Plextor X-716AL (I don't use PlexTools but it runs on x64)

Video:

Gigabyte 7600 GS AGP with newest Nvidia Forceware (1368x768)

A few apps that run:
Girder 4.0
Nod32
Outpost Firewall
There is also a plugin for LCD Smartie to display Playing Now info that runs smoothly

DC, by this do you mean a fancy LCD panel that lives in one of your drive bays which displays the current Playing Now info from MC?

If so, how did you set this up, because I want one (badly).  I'd need to know:

1. What LCD did you buy and where?
2. What software runs it, and what plugin do you work to get it to "read" MC's Playing Now data?
3. What other cool stuff can it do when MC isn't running?

Glynnor,

I bought the optional model for the Uneed X11 HTPC case from PCAlchemy. Got the case a few years ago and the LCD very recently. X64 drivers were not working at first; I had to re0install the IRtrans driver on every reboot. This VFD sits behind a glass window in the X11, and it uses a USB header on the MB.

It works now with Girder on x64. LCDsmartie is the app I use to do just about antying on the display.

I can upload the plugin for LCDsmartie although I think someone posted it here on the forum.

I currently have 5 or 6 screens. The can scroll, fade, or hop into view. I have CPU type/speed and processor usage screen (which I can sticky if I need to monitor that for a while in particular). I have downstream and upstream net traffic, MC plugin has a bunch of screen since I have top line show Genre, next line show Style. Then Artist/Album, Name/Duration, etc.

Download LCDsmarite and it has a zillion presets for Winamp, Email, System (temps, mem, etc.) and you can run this app w/o an LCD. It mimics an LCD on your monitor so you can tweak it, if need be, then minimize. Once you add the VFD, it will send it all to the VFD.

Cool!  Thanks a lot for the info.  I'm gonna look into that soon.  I actually broke one of the drive bay cover panels on my HTPC and it'd be nice to just replace it with a good LCD screen that could show some useful stuff.
