Any plans for an aac encoder ?
« on: January 17, 2007, 02:07:39 pm »

Hi,

I tried it some time ago ..... to make a encoder plugin, but because of my bad aknowledge about com program. I failed hardly. So I beg to everyone, who has the skills, to make a encoder plugin with nero aac and the possibility for low complex. encoding for ipods. It would be great and it would encourrage many people to change to Mc only. The most only need itunes for aac encoding...with the disadvanages of itunes a terrible thing. Maybe the sourcecodes from scthom flac plugins are usefull for the development. But pls donīt turn a blind eye on the aac format but try to support it.

is there someone in the community, who is even thinking about to program an aac encoder plugin like scthom who made/makes a fantastic work with flac encoder.

Can I ask why people don't use MC solely for their iPod?  Aren't iPods capable of playing MP3's?  Not that I don't support adding aac because more file support is great, but why do people with iPods need aac?

No promises, but I'll look into it.  For a while, there were no available SDKs.  Now that there's faad and faac, there may be something I can use.  Speaking of which, you know you can use the command-line plugin to run any aac program right? -- it's almost as good as a real plugin.  Or anything that used DirectShow will also work.

Yes but Iīve the problem that I need the tags... now the external encoder gives only a wav to neroaac and itīs not possible to tag then. but I want directly encode to ipod you know.... so if you have free time and you have the feeling then it would be nice. But it would be cool if you can use nero aac for that, because of better quality.

neroAAC is a command-line codec.  You set up MC using the command-line interface (Plug-in Manager->Encoder->External Encoder) and then point it to neroAAC.  Then you can make aac files from within MC.  The decoder/tagging is handled by input plugins, of which there isn't one for MC, so you can't tag or play them.  Unless you use a DirectShow plugin (there may be one, I don't know), in which case you can play them, but not tag them.

There is no neroAAC SDK, so I can't use it as the base for a plugin.

there is the problem.... if I would have such an external encoder which can tag it would be ok but...
But if you have some free time and you can look into aac it would be nice  :) :D

I looked into the comparison and faac is quite near Nero. The quality is near the same since 1.25.

I looked a bit more.  The software faac/faad is free of copyright, but not patent.  It appears that end-user products still require patent royalties.  See http://www.vialicensing.com/licensing/MPEG4_fees.cfm?product=MPEG-4AAC

Just to use mpeg-4/AAC (even to ISO standards) requires them.  Even if I can implement it, which I haven't tried yet, I wouldn't be able to release it free.  Just to set up a license would cost me $1000 and I would have to charge $5-10 or so for the products.  I'm just not set up to do that.

and when you only release the source code?
then only a short message says how to compile the dll and the mjr file is included.
I only wonder, because on http://www.rarewares.org a compiled faac.exe can be download.

I think thatÂīs legal.... I can remember lame and faac used it for a while.

It would be sad if the project fails.

scthom pls answer short if you have any plans to release the sr code.

However many thanks to you - you were the first person, who had ever looked into programming an aac plugin.
Thx

I'm not a lawyer, but...

I still think you need a license to do that.  Maybe not patent royalties, though.

At the moment, I'm not planning on implementing it.  Maybe in the future, but not now.

I do, too.  And I think you deserve some credit for respecting the license.
