Crash when converting to WMV
« on: January 24, 2007, 08:50:45 am »

Hello,
I am trying to get MC to convert MOV files to WMV.  I have installed the directshow filter for MP4 etc (http://www.free-codecs.com/FFDShow_download.htm) and I have verified I can play the mov files in Windows Media Player.  Have you guys tested it with this codec or am I doing something wrong?

I can provide logs if needed.

  Thanks!

Do the files play and thumbnail nicely with MC using the DirectX engine?

Hey Matt,
Well I picked a simple podcast for an example, RocketBoom.  If I open the mov file in MC it does indeed play normally.
When it converts, that is when it crashes.

I think it is played in Quicktime engine.

Videos can be converted only if they are played in DirectShow.

Well the first thing I tried was playing it in Windows Media Player, this worked normally.  This is a directshow player right?

There may be correct DirectShow filter combination on your system that would allow it played in DirectShow. MC does not do that with MOV files because there are not easily available DirectShow filters that can handle all MOV files. Maybe we can change that.

For the moment, you can verify whether it is played in QT engine or DirectShow engine by right-clicking the video window and look for menu item "DirectShow Filters". Another menu item to look at is "Set Display".

Ok, you are right, in MC it uses quicktime and in WMP I assume it uses directshow..  Is there any way to force MC to use directshow?  Is my assumption about WMP correct?

Thanks!

Is my assumption about WMP correct?

Yes, except that WMP may use an internal file source filter instead of a public one (this is true for Windows Media files, not sure about MOV files).
