Crash on exit after completing iPod sync seems to have been fixed - thanks!

Something new and strange is happening with iPod sync. After installing 12.0.179 I synced my iPod nano which I know was already completely sync'd. It reported about 200 files needed to be updated. After this sync completed I rechecked sync and it reported another 90 files had changed. Again I sync'd these and then rechecked sync. It now reported another 64 files had changed. Using the same sequence of operations, it reported 50, 46, and so on.

My theory is that it thinks every file has changed, yet I do not understand why it did not pick them all up at once, and I have no idea what changed because I did not change any of my media in MC, or on my iPod.

I thought maybe auto-import was building thumbnails in the background however I confirmed I have this option turned off.

16:45 I plugged in my ipod, and MC says that almost ALL of my 11k tracks need to be synched.

It's weird.  A few random tracks in my collection are not marked for "delete on synch", but only a few.

I have not changed the tags on almost ALL of my files.  So far MC has been sitting doing what appears to be nothing for over 10 minutes after I clicked "Synch".  I'm guessing it's deleting files on the ipod - for unknown reasons...

16:58 Finally, it's now started copying files to my ipod, I guess this is almost a full re-synch.  Is this normal for some reason?  It says 5.5 hours to complete.

MC was VERY responsive during the wait.  Now that it's started copying files, MC has become very sluggish with SLOW screen redraws and is only copying at 1.3mb per second with poor movement in the grid area as files are copied.  When I switch to "Playing Now" the visualizations in the track info are very jerky.  Fortunately, other programs on my computer do not seem to be affected by the MC slowness and jerkiness.  Processor is loaded 10-15% with MC using about 6%.

17:48  MC just broke loose.  MC is totally responsive now and the uploads are 5.0 - 6.5 mb per second.  3.4 hours remaining.

This is EXACTLY how MC worked with 164 and earlier.  Is this normal?  If yes, I'll stop reporting it, but it sure seems like a bug to me.

I'm giving up. iPod sync is unusable.

After each sync/re-check sync the number of files reduced, however after about 20 of these cycles I never got it to stop.

I would also like to confirm slipknot's observation that my data transfer rate has dropped by about 50% to 2 MB/s from the previous version of MC.

I've done that with other MC versions, no help (been forced to with lockups and ipod data loss). 

So it's reasonable to assume that whatever is causing the SAME kind of trouble with this release will not be helped with a reinitialization.

Can you narrow down what types of files this may be happening with?  Are you using DirectShow filters to play them?

I'll do some testing as well.  I plugged in a fully synced iPod with almost 15,000 tracks on it.  MC came back saying 11,000 plus tracks had to be synced.  This sounds like the same problem you were having.  So I'm going to initialize the iPod before I re-sync to see if that has anything to do with it.

I did some tests.  As I mentioned, when I plugged my iPod in with 12.0.179, it came back and said 11,000 plus tracks needed to be synced.  So I did some further testing.

First I initialized the iPod and made sure the firmware was current (current version of firmware is 1.2.1).

Next I synced the iPod.  I only added a few hundred tracks to speed up the test.

I could not duplicate your problem.  After it syncs, it does not show any false need to sync some of the tracks again.  I tried it multiple times.  Also, I do not have any problems with crashing.  I find MC12 to be very stable. 

Note:  I only synced MP3 and M4B files with this test.

My test may have been too small to duplicate your problem.  I'll do a large sync (~15,000 tracks) and see if the problem shows up.

I just finished a full sync using 12.0.179.  It's a mixture of mp3, m4b, jpg, and mp4.  Over 70gb of data.  I still cannot duplicate your issue.  The sync was perfect.  After the sync, it showed fully synced.  I ejected the iPod and reconnected it.  It still shows fully synced.

I suggest you verify you have the latest iPod firmware and initialize the iPod.  Maybe that will help.

When you say "initialize iPod" do you mean executing a hard reset but leaving the files intact? Or do you mean fully clearing the memory?

Initialize is a function within MC.  It clears all of the data off the iPod and prepares it for a clean sync.  If there are problems with the database on the iPod, this takes care of that.

To do the initialize, you have to have the iPod connected to MC.  Go to the iPod device in the tree.  Do a right click and you will have an option to initialize.  Note:  this can take some time if you have a lot of data on the iPod.

I did notice one minor issue. After initializing it reported that I would have a few MB free upon completion. After the sync completed it reported I was overcapacity by about 20MB.

I am not doing any conversions on sync. Does this point to a problem in the free space calculation?

Capacity is a little squishy because we leave space for cover art, the database, etc. on upload.

Either way, please let us know if it acts up again. (and hopefully what happened to cause the issue)

I did update my iPod firmware from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 and resynced with 164 before updating to 179. I also know I did not change any of the media that was loaded on my iPod.

Could the firmware upgrade be the root cause?

If not, I believe there must be some incompatibility in the MC iPod database between 164 & 179. My guess is that more people will report this issue after they try a sync.

I saw a similar behaviour when switching from 12.0.164 to 12.0.179:
The first sync after the update showed more than 5000 files to sync, took about 2 hours.

Ejected the ipod, reconnected and again MC showed more than 5000 files top sync.
Didn´t wanted to wait again so I stopped the sync. After that there were only 900 files
on the ipod. 

So I updated the ipod-firmware with Itunes (from 1.2 to 1.2.1) then initialised it with MC
and started the sync again.
Now it seems to be OK. Reconnection only show some 100 files to sync, as it is normal
for my transferred smartlists.

So I think there is really a sort of incompatibility between 164 and 179.

Today I saw another issue with 12.0.179 after starting MC and connecting the ipod.
The status-window of the device (where MC shows "on device","delete on sync","in Queue" etc)
did not change and MC showed no more reaction, but the taskmanager showed that MC worked
with >30% CPU as if MC was working on Thumbnail update or so.
I had to kill the process.
After restart of MC all works again.
