Greetings - In my Media Library I have WAV |PLS| APE |PLS| MP3 |PLS| WMA files & ofcourse their individual volume levels are all over the place. Can anyone please explain in simple language how to go about Volume Levelling these various files in either a Playlist prior to burning or even the entire Media Library?

Thanks for any assistance you may be able to offer.

Kindest regards - Rusty in OZ

Rusty - open the media library view, select all the songs, right click and select properties. When properties page opens (if you have a lot of files it may take a little while) look in the tools menu for "Analyze Replay Gain" - select that. Another window will open, start the process and sit back.

When this is complete, save all the analysis data.

In the tools menu check out DSP functions and enable Replay Gain (I set mine for 6dB). Voila.

Select the files.  Right-click on the selected files and choose Properties.  Click on the Tools menu and choose Analyze Replay Gain, then Analyze.

Once you have analyzed your files, you need to enable Replay Gain in the DSP Studio.

Down on the bottom left near the player controls, choose Playback Filter, then DSP Studio.  Put a check mark in the Replay Gain option.

Does this change the volume only when played back from within MJ or by other mp3 players, too?  And, is it easily un-doable?

Thank you very, very much JOE|PLS|MAMA & GATOBRIT for taking the time to answer this important question for me.

Perhaps you could also enlighten me a bit more, as I understand zero on Replay Gain ...

a) - Is there any concensus on the best setting for the Replay Gain setting? One big thing I noticed while doing the exercise was that the analysis indicated a negative figure for all of the song files that were analysed e.g. -8.034 etc, but GATOBRIT suggested that I use a global positive setting of 6db ... is this correct? Is it |PLS|6db or -6db that I should set it at?

b) - I thought I'd read somewhere that the Replay Gain only worked on the MP3 files?  Is this correct or does it work on any audio file e.g. OGG, WMA, WAV, APE etc?

c) - So now am I assuming correctly that after doing this exercise & setting a global Replay Gain figure on say a Playlist that I'm about to burn, that when I do burn it that there will be no need to have to keep jumping up & adjusting the volume level.

Much thanks to any & all who respond to this query - Rusty.

I'm not a Replay Gain expert either, I only really started using it a few months ago.  It is kind of confusing. Hopefully I can explain correctly.

a)Because of the production and mastering techniques used on most commercial CDs, their loudness is very close to or above the limit where clipping of the audio signal occurs.  The official Replay Gain specs (which is what MJ follows) use 83dB as the target loudness, which is 17dB lower than the maximum before clipping.  Note that developers of other Replay Gain tools like MP3gain, Replay Gain (for MPC) and Vorbis Gain use 89dB as the target instead of (the official) 83dB.  This was to appease people who complained that 83dB was to low, especially when listening to portable players.  So, if you us  6dB in your Global Settings, this effectively raises the loudness of the files you analyzed with MJ to 89db and just gives you a little extra loudness boost.  You can choose any value you prefer for the global setting, though.  It has a range of  /-12dB, I believe.

b)The Replay Gain feature in MJ works with any format that MJ can play.

c)AFAIU, the Replay Gain anaylization in MJ only affects playback.  If you want to burn a playlist that has been Replay Gained in MJ, you must first playback the list using the Disk Writer plug-in, which will write new Replay Gained wav files to your hard drive and then you would burn using those wavs.

Only when played back from within MJ.  Right now, there is not an "Undo Replay Gain" option.  You can disable Replay Gain playback in the DSP Studio, though.
