MC Video capabilities
« on: March 01, 2007, 07:51:05 am »

Recently there was some discussion on should MC have the ability to do DVD ripping or not. This was a great question, but personally i have a lot of Xvid and divx movies already and would like to see better video handling and management integrated first (ripping is cool, and i want the feature, but i need help managing what i have first)

Recently i have played with a program called extreme movie manager a bit, it has some good ideas, but left me wishing i could manage everything in one place.

Here are some things i would like to see better integrated in MC (and if the feature exists, tell me)
1. Tagging of video files similar to MP3 tags. If you can't plug the tags into the file, how about in to the MC database?
2. The ability to pull tag info from the internet.
3. The ability to designate multi part files as one movie. Think "movie disk1.avi" + "movie disk2.avi" becomes "movie.avi" to the user.
4. Video conversion from one format to another would be great, but it seems like it would take a LOT of codec knowledge to do. Unless there was a library available and MC would only provide the user interface.
5. I will be buying a SAN storage device and something for audio/video playback soon and my ultimate goal is to be able to use my audio and video library on my TV, browsing and playing my library.

What are your thoughts? Anyone Else?

You can.  MC handles tagging video files just like it does anything else.  If the container format supports file tags, it often uses them as well (though many video containers don't -- such as AVI).  However, you can always tag using the built-in database....

2. The ability to pull tag info from the internet.
3. The ability to designate multi part files as one movie. Think "movie disk1.avi" + "movie disk2.avi" becomes "movie.avi" to the user.

I agree here.  These things were asked for, but the first step would be to handle DVDs well.

4. Video conversion from one format to another would be great, but it seems like it would take a LOT of codec knowledge to do. Unless there was a library available and MC would only provide the user interface.

It does, but not if it's implemented well.

5. I will be buying a SAN storage device and something for audio/video playback soon and my ultimate goal is to be able to use my audio and video library on my TV, browsing and playing my library.

Many of us do this now, myself included.  Consider a HTPC rather than a standalone device for the TV.  You'll get a lot more mileage out of it that way...

Perhaps i should have been more detailed on the idea of tagging. i want more detail specific to movies, plot, director, studio etc.

Media Centers tagging is completley customizable,
If you go to Tools -> Options -> Library & Folders
You can add User defined fields or edit standard fields.

as Mr Chriz said. go to options>library & Folders>user library fields. and make those tags. i made a director and a cast tag there. as lists (semicolon delimited) data type. so i can put more directors and actors underneath a movie.

I think what jsfarmer may be refering to is something along the lines of ABCavi tagging.

see http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=38096.msg259135#msg259135

...which tends to indicate AVI tagging is possible (with quite some detail), although I cant comment on whether or not it's 'within spec' of the container format.
