Lossless transcoding for UPnP devices.
« on: March 06, 2007, 04:21:36 pm »

I was about to post to an old MC11 thread, but this seems more appropriate.

I'm looking for a DMR, or maybe a few.  I've got a few requirements that are making my choosing difficult:

Needs to work with MC (ie UPnP): I just won't give up Smartlists, picking my custom smartlists is so much better than messing with static playlists or browsing for particular CDs.

Needs to be lossless:  My entire music collection is lossless, currently WMA Lossless, and I will not purchase a player (for home) that can't deal with lossless audio (either native or transcoded to WAV/PCM).

The prime candidates are the Soundbridge and the Squeezebox.  The Squeezebox looks like nicer hardware, but I've got the Slimserver on my ReadyNAS and I'm not impressed with it.  Navigation/music selection just looks far to painful (no smartlists).

That leaves the Roku.  This is somewhat preferable as it's a lot cheaper than the Squeezebox, but more importantly than that, it appears that with it's UPnP support and MC's UPnP server I can get 99% of the MC functionality I use.  That leaves the kicker, my lossless collection.  I really, really don't want to have my lossless collection transcoded to a crappy lossy format when there's no good reason (plenty of bandwidth at home).

So, from searching/reading the forums I've seen the possibility of getting "WAV" added to the UPnP server, what I'm wondering is if that's still possible, is there any hope for it happening (soon)?

Or, if all else fails, anybody have an alternate suggestion for DMR solution with smartlists and Lossless support?

I would aslo love to have WAV transcoding added to MC's UPnP server.
