It was just recently decided that my work would be purchasing one of these:
http://www.9xmedia.com/Pages-products/2000%20-%20Xwall.htmlSpecifically, it'll be a video wall built out of 6-8 (depending) 42" DLP screens, 2 high and either 3 or 4 across. We're building a new "main entrance" and lobby area, and it will be used as a digital display "case" and sign. I'm personally going to be in charge of building custom content for it (videos and slideshows mostly), and managing it.
The DLP based systems are very nice because they don't require much in the way of bezels separating the screens. This system actually only has a 1/8" gap from "pixel to pixel" on the edges of the screens (the average LCD panel based display has more like a 2 1/2" gap). DLP does, of course, require more depth (about 15" the rep said) and some additional cooling and maintenance (you have to replace the bulbs about once per year). That really is going to be quite a desktop though... Even if we go with the smaller system (3 42" screens across), I'll be looking at a desktop size of 5760 x 2160 pixels!! Of course, you'd rarely try to scale content to the full screen (the software that runs it is like UltraMon on crack -- it actually looks like they probably bought the source to UltraMon -- but there's a lot of extra functionality not well explained on the 9X web page).
Since the "server" that runs it is basically just a fancy Windows XP box with some custom hardware, I'm actually planning to use MC to run most of it (wahoo detached displays and multiple zones!!). As soon as it's installed and up and running, I'll be taking and sharing pictures to be sure. (And, Jim, I'll be licensing an additional copy of MC for the office as well -- since this thing will likely outlast me here.)
Does anyone else have a similar installation and have any comments? I'm excited, but also quite nervous! I'm not sure how I'm going to generate enough content to make the thing worthwhile!
