DVDs won't play after installing ...
« on: April 07, 2007, 06:55:15 am »

I don't believe this problem has anything to do with MC12 because (altho the symptoms are different) none of my DVD players work.  That said, I cannot imagine someone here not having experienced the problem.

Prior to DVDs not playing, I (1) upgraded my ATI 9700P catalyst driver, and (2) updated my installation of Nero CD/DVD burning software.

symptoms:
MC11.1 plays the DVD and I get audio, but no video ...

MC12 (trial, soon to purchase) used to report (paraphrasing) ... "something wrong with Intervideo video decoder ... please choose another".  So I go to DVD playback settings, and change it to the ATI video decoder, and now MC12 whenever I try to play a DVD or change the DVD playback settings simply crashes ("mediacenter has encountered a problem and needs to close ...")...

Intervideo WinDVD reports "cannot create overlay, please reduce screen size or depth ..."

I've tried re-installing WinDVD for its codec ...

Hopefully someone here has experienced/remedied this problem, but most immediately I need to fix MC12 to get it out of this "crashing" state.

TIA & cheerios  :)

MC12 uses DirectShow filters.  Some are better than others.  Please see this thread by Yaobing:

Oh, Nero again  :(

Besides doing  what Jim suggested, you can also try the following:

Do you have ATI Multimedia pack? You may try reinstalling that. Strictly follow ATI's instructions for installation. This may fix it as I always have good luck using the "Cyberlink Video decoder (ATI)" for DVD playback.

Yes ... I have re-insalled Catalyst drivers 7.3, along all the modules that come with MMC v9.16.  I don't want to return to Cat7.2, because this new version fixes a problem.  MMC's own DVD player also gives me an error message ... "Fatal error: Failed to render video stream."  All other players have not changed, and I still cannot get MC12 to allow me to change 'DVD playback settings' without crashing when I click on 'options=>playback=>DVD playback settings ..." (which I hate to do because MC12 always restarts insisting on default settings).  Under 'Playback/Directshow settings' I see nothing to change, so they're at their defaults.

Another clue is that prior to MC12 crashing on me, DVD playback was constantly prompting me because of percieved problems with the Intervideo decoder.  Changing it to 'auto' only got me the same result.  It was when I selected the "ATI decoder" that MC12 now simply crashes.

Of course all of this is after updating Nero 7, which has never given me problems before (having also used ~10 versions of Nero 6).  I don't use their players (NATCH!) but they're installed.  In fact Nero's DVD player indicates "Application requires DirectDraw Accelerations ..." and then provides too brief instructions that I haven't yet figured out yet.

Finally ... thank you for your prompt replies (this Easter weekend) and your excellent support!   ;)

There are a couple of Nero threads here from the last 30 days.  Please try a search.

Just to make sure I am clear enough. Your first post said you 1. Installed ATI software, then 2. Installed Nero.

The installation of Nero might have messed up the ATI. So what I was trying to suggest was to install ATI again. If that was not what you did, please try it. Otherwise, please try installing CCCP mentioned in the FAQ linked by Jim.

Installing CCCP didn't help  ...

After installing Nero, uninstalling the ATI drivers (v7.3) and re-installing (v7.3) didn't help ...

However ... uninstalling Nero (including using Nero's CleanTool), uninstalling the ATI drivers (including media software), and re-installing ATI divers (v7.2) did help, and now all DVD softwares play normally ...

Installing the older previous version of Nero didn't break anything ...

However, now I have the problem associated with ATI drivers (v7.2) whereby DVD or AVI playback takes over both monitors when I want it to be full-screen on the 2nd display, which is my HDTV.

Installing the ATI drivers (and MMC software) is such a hassle, as much as I'd like to try v7.3 again I don't know whether to ruin my Easter Sunday or not (... if I only had Monday off ...<g>...)

This is an issue, it's an option inside the ATI Catalyst drivers.  Go to:

Catalyst Control Center --> Switch to Advanced View if needed --> Avivo Video --> Theater Mode.  Change the option for the Second Display under Extended desktop shows overlay to in Theater Mode (full screen).

Thanx for your reply.  I received a similar reply from the Rage3D forum but this option didn't seem to work for my computer.  It does however work (for me) with Cat7.3, which I upgraded to without further problems.  I don't know what it was about the Nero upgrade (7.8.5.0), but it sure broke my DVD players, including Nero's own(?)

I've been decidedly unimpressed with Nero 7.x.  Every time I hear a new horror story about it, I'm more and more glad I decided to stick with Nero 6 (which I love).  Hopefully, by the time I decide to move to Vista, they'll have gotten it all sorted out (and be on v8.5 or something).
