No sound from MJ with updated SB Audigy driver
« on: August 26, 2002, 10:55:09 am »

I just upgraded my Creative Audigy driver to the release dated 8/13 and as a result I no longer have any sound on playback in MJ.  The same files/CD's play fine in Media Player and RealPlayer (ugh).  Help please!!!

I just installed the 5.12.2.252 drivers from the Compaq web site and had no problems at all.

Have you...
Double checked the playback settings in MJ?
Double checked your system Multimedia/Audio settings?
Reinstalled either MJ or the drivers?

More info would help, like which OS, which version of MJ, what MJ output method (wave out, direct sound, wave mapper, etc)

Several times and nothing has changed from before the upgrade.

Double checked your system Multimedia/Audio settings?

Yes, and again nothing has changed and no functions are muted.

Reinstalled either MJ or the drivers?

Upgrading from the previous build to .556 didn't fix the problem.  I'll just reinstalled the drivers and the problem remains.  I don't understand why sounds work fine from all other applications.

Hmmm.  Try setting MJ to Direct Sound output and 16bit depth.  If that doesn't work, run the DirectX Diagnostics by opening a command prompt and running dxdiag.  Select the Sound tab and run the tests.

Try opening the Creative AudioHQ and set digital outputs to "default" rather than "SPDIF Bypass"

No sound in MJ regardless of which setting is selected.

run the DirectX Diagnostics

No problems detected.

It was set on default.

What's different about MJ that prevents playback when Windows Media has no problem?  Maybe I should do a rollback to the previous Audigy drivers.

Microsoft.

The earlier drivers would be my next stop.

It might be worthwhile to report the problem to the manufacturer.

I rolled back to the Audigy driver dated 1/21/02 (AVD-2KDRV-W2-LA) and all is fine again.  For the record, the driver that doesn't work (at least on my system) is AVD-WEBUP-w2-US, dated 8/26/02.

Jim, I will follow up on your suggestion and notify Creative.  Thanks for your help, RemyJ and JClark.

As much as I try to keep all of my drivers updated, sometimes it's better to go with the theory that if it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Ive actually come to realize that youre lucky to squeeze 1 driver update every 6 months out of creative so you almost have to grab it and run with it. They are usually quite stable and tend to be quite more efficient than the previous. Mine upgraded fine and ive had no problems. However, as is the case with you, occasionally it just finds a system setup that it just doesnt like. Ahh the eternal plight of updating drivers.

shelley....
your problem worried me, because for my new dream machine i included a creative audigy platinum soundcard with the latest drivers, and as mj is my favourite jukebox, dont want to get issues like you seem to have had. if you get any replies out of creative, could you notify me of what they say? maybe by putting up a message here, or posting a new message with a subject like "creative drivers/mjcompatibility problems-creative replies"?.....thanks

Well, I just applied the 253 version of the drivers from Creative's web site and am working fine.  Doesn't mean the driver isn't causing Shelly's problem but it did work OK for my setup.

That's good to know, Remy.  It certainly narrows it done to a problem with my system.  I've sent in a request for support from Creative and am awaiting their reply.  I'll post the outcome when I have an answer from them.

Not one to give up easily,  I applied the 252 version drivers from  Compaq's site and the sound in MJ is terrific.  I'm still waiting on a response from Creative on the problem with the 253 version posted on their site.  Anyone wanna have a guess at how many days/weeks before I get a reply?
