It isn't exactly a lock-up...it's only temporary.  The new Library Server thumbnail downloading is much better than it used to be but I still have one complaint.  It mainly deals with the display window, especially when a cover art visualization is used.  In this case, it does download the full cover art file--GOOD behavior.  The only problem is that while it downloads, MC is essentially locked up with nothing usable except the spectrum viewers at the top do move.  So if it could somehow download the image in the background and still let MC be used...then if a song was switched before downloading was complete, stop the download and work on the new file.
