Ratings not updating (iPod > MC12)
« on: June 08, 2007, 11:17:05 am »

This has been going on for a while now.  When I rate songs on the iPod, those ratings do not update MC12 when I sync.  Initialized the iPod and reloaded, but they still don't update.  'Get play stats from handheld on connect' is enabled.

Using an iPod Photo and running Vista.

quick question:
Do you save the rating in the file tag? (this is default behaviour, so, if you didn't change anything, the answer is most probably 'yes')

there's more on this subject in this thread --> http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=38699.0

Actually, no I don't do that anymore.  Trying (in vain) to make MC friendly for 2 different users, and so I stopped saving the rating to the file tags and am using custom fields and separate libraries to deal with ratings.  So MC does not sync ratings from the portable to the library if you don't store them in the file tags?

Correct.

Correct.

Is that on purpose, or is it a bug?  If it is on purpose, why?

By design, I think...

The rule for updating the rating for matching files from the iPod to MC is as follows:

IF the MC file has not been modified since the file was transfered to the iPod AND
IF the iPod rating is not 0 AND
IF the iPod rating is not equal to the rating for the file in MC

(risingdamp - This means that your new MC rating will not be overridden by the iPod rating since the MC file has been modified (when you changed the rating) since it was transferred to the iPod.)

That's the theory - we're looking for problems with the execution of this, particularly where caching files is involved.

Stay tuned...

Well, following that logic the ratings SHOULD be updating but they are not.

In my case, the MC file has NOT been modified since I transferred it to the iPod
The iPod rating is NOT 0 (for the files I have rated since on the iPod since the load)
The iPod rating is NOT = MC rating (for the files I have rated on the iPod since the load)

my problem is that if I change a rating in MC:

the file is not modified because I do not save ratings in the file
the ipod rating is not zero because the file had a rating at the time of transfer
the ipod rating does not equal the MC rating because I changed the MC rating

So, when I connect the ipod, instead of the ipod being brought into line with the rating changes in MC, the changes I made in MC are overwritten by the old rating data on the ipod, which, to put it mildly, is not really very helpful at all.
