MC insists on QuickTime.
« on: June 12, 2007, 10:48:00 pm »

I setup a PC in the house with Win2k, MC 12 (the latest), Matroska Splitter (downloaded from the Haali Media Splitter homepage?!), and ffdshow_beta2a_20070322_clsid. My music collection is mp4's (m4a extension). When I double click a music file, MC throws up a QuickTime out of date window. I don't even think QT is installed on that PC. It's a fairly fresh install, and I couldn't find it anywhere. Not in Add/Remove programs, and only a few worthless entries in the registry.

I tried setting the playback settings for mp4 and m4a to no effect. (I read the wiki article.) I can load an mp4 in GraphEdit, and it plays fine. Everything looks ok in my novice opinion.

What else can I do to check to make sure MC12 has what it need configured to play mp4?

P.S. Not sure if it makes a difference, but the user is signed in under a power user account on Win2k SP4+, not administrator.

MC uses Quicktime to handle supported file types if either:

a) DirectShow playback is disabled for that particular file type in MC's DirectShow Playback Options.  DirectShow playback support IS  disabled by default for M4A files, so that users migrating from iTunes with no appropriate DirectShow filters installed can play the files back.  All you have to do is turn it on if you have the appropriate filters installed to handle playback.  Are you sure you have checked the M4A box, and not added any weird filters (just leave the selected filters alone)?

or

b) Even if DirectShow is enabled for a particular file type, MC will still use Quicktime if the DirectShow filter graph fails to render.  Essentially, it "falls back" to Quicktime.

In your case, I'm sure it's just because M4A is disabled in MC's DirectShow playback options.  Refer to this page on the Wiki for info:  http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/DirectShow_Playback_Guide#Advanced_DirectShow_Configuration_in_MC12

I should also mention.... Two open-source methods that WILL configure your system to handle MP4's in all their varieties without issue are: CCCP or KLCP Basic.  Check the wiki page I linked above for further info on those filter sets.

Quicktime Alternative can also be used to add in support for actual MOV and QTL files.

Just had this myself, although on Vista.

The solution is to
  a) make sure that mp4 is checked in the DirectShow File Types options (Tools-> Playback-> Video-> Directshow Playback Settings)
  b) make sure that ffdshow is configured to enable for h.264/AVC playback (or anything else you think it should be used for for that matter).

Edit: damned glynor and his super fast fingers  :P

Edit2: I'm using klite codec pack (latest, without Quicktime alt. I'm using ffdshow for the render)

I found the fix... sort of... I installed ffdshow again with no restrictions on audio decoding. Strange because the default application support list has media center 12.exe in it. Allow for all, and now I see Haali and ffdshow's icons appearing when playing files back. What process was denied because it wasn't in the list? I don't know. It works now.

I have a similar problem. I have used both the Matroska splitter/ffdshow and Quicktime alternative without problems. I have most recently been using Quicktime Alternative. With version 12.0.251, I started getting the "Download Quicktime" dialog box. I uninstalled Quicktime Alternative and reinstalled. The first m4a song in a playlist would play, but not subsequent songs. I got the same results with Matroska/ffdshow. I even tried selecting the actual directshow filters in the options and still had no success. I finally downloaded Apple's Quicktime and have not had any problems. However, I am curious why playback would work on the first song and not subsequent songs when using alternative codecs.
