Odd little Vista bug
« on: June 15, 2007, 06:56:27 pm »

Not sure what to make of this one TBH. Too many factors for me to say definitely its MC, but I'd definitely point the finger in your direction  ;)
This is whats happened to date-
I installed Vista32 as an upgrade from XP. Nothing special here, unless the upgrade process has wrecked things somewhere.
Installed a fresh copy of MC 12.0.251 on this install, along with CCP & QT/ Real alternative.
Cut & pasted the whole library/ thumbs folder back from the old Windows backup.
Launch MC- Everything runs fine.
Close MC & attempt to re-open it, and it fails to load the library. I've checked & there are absolutely no modifications made to any of the library files; They're byte identical.
Reboot the computer & MC will again open and run perfectly for the single time.
A brand-new library/ deleting the thumbs makes absolutely no difference.

Setting compatibility to XP SP2 fixes the problems, but obviously I'd rather not.

Leezer - this wont help but I had something similar. New PC with Vista preinstalled in February, installed MC12 (latest version at the time), and I was getting similar symptoms. Intermittently MC would fail to load library on start. Closing MC and restarting would generally fix it. Im not sure if rebooting always worked.

Funny thing is, it seems to have gone away, but Im not sure when: Id forgotten about it until your post. I hadnt tried the XP compatibility thing. Clearly I didnt spend too much time diagnosing it - like you too many factors. Maybe a Vista update did something? Ive certainly installed newer MC builds since February - FWIW Im using MC12.0.233 now.

As I say, sorry I cant offer any suggestions.

No, compatibility obviously doesn't fix the problems, as it's jamming once more. Changing the compatibility mode was fixing it a few reboots back, but not ATM.
You're not using Vista Business are you?
12.0.259 doesn't do anything either.

Another odd thing I've just noticed too is that if you load MC with a different library & then try to load the main library, it complains that the library is in use by another user, but it isn't.

Edit2: Yet another oddity- Attempting to load a file from a network share (Mapped to a drive letter) triggers this behaviour 100% of the time to date, but the same file on a local drive works perfectly.
Edit3: This only appears to occur when compatibilty mode is set.

Starting to look like a bug somewhere in the network code TBH. I have pretty recently added a few files on a network share (All audio, requiring a one-time sync to the Ipod & then retention in the library), but this is pre-Vista, & there were never any problems on XP.

No, Vista Home Premium. Ive only ever had 1 main library on a primary PC - no network share stuff or secondary libraries.

Another unhelpful post, but I hope you get it working.

I'm guessing you don't have full permissions in the folder you're keeping your library in.  Make sure you have all permissions, including delete access.

For the record, my library folder is the MC default for my - limited -account (C:\Users\David\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 12\Library). I have full permissions for that, I assume. I didnt restore my old library from my old PC, just transferred the media and let MC rebuild the library on install.

The media is stored in the Public Music/Public Pictures folders - these top level folders are owned by administrator I think, but I have full permissions for all the album subfolders etc I think - I cant fully decipher the Vista permissions settings dialog.

I can see the logic in the permissions idea, but I cant think of anything I may have done to seemingly make it go away for me. Hope this helps Leezer.

My library is also in the default folder. I've also tried taking ownership of the folders/ files in question, no change there. Media is stored across 6 different local drives & a network drive, again I have full permissions for all of these folders.
My user is an admin, & the only user present on this machine.

I had the same problem when I switched to Vista (also Business), importing the library from XP it worked fine until MC was closed and restarted twice, then it would fail to load.  In the end I gave up and started a new library and just reimported everything, and had no more problems.
Occasionally recently it has also failed to load the library again, but usually on second attempt is OK (although the first time it happened I had to go back to a much earlier backup).

Thats interesting- Maybe its an issue primarily with libraries created in XP?
Could MC be retaining a temp folder or similar somewhere, which causes problems when it tries to access it in Vista?
Should be a fairly easy test to do at JR's end I would think  :)

I think that MC still not Vista ready at the moment, may be work but not good. We will wait for the Vista compatible.

It's in moderately heavy use on Vista now, largely succesful.

Perhaps Vista isn't quite ready yet.  SP1?

Same here on Vista Ultimate

Are you using a mapped network drive for the library?  If you map the drive elevated and run MC non-elevated, the drive won't be immediately available.

The libraries not on a network drive here. I have got 3k files on a networked drive (Secondary audio, only generally used when syncing devices), & these are fairly recent additions, but pre Vista.
Everyone with this issue so far appears to have moved from XP to Vista, but we do have one person with a clean library as opposed to an older one. Admittedly this does point to permissions somewhere along the line, but I am 99% certain I have full permissions on everything.
The network drive is Samba mapped to my Linux server, nothing really special as far as I'm aware. It should also exclude Windows based permissions problems there?

Im pretty sure I didnt do this to solve my similar problem (ie had the problem using an XP library in Vista), as with the new Vista PC I attempted to organise my stuff better than I had in XP, with limited accounts etc from the start. So new locations required a new library scan. But I have no idea how it fixed itself.

Anyway, all my contributions seem to have been pretty negative so far. Sorry :). Ill monitor this thread and hope you find a solution.

Hi Matt - I don't - but I also can not tell you what sequence of events triggers it off - I've just not been able to notice a pattern.  It is not frequent (for me) but when it does happen it seems to happen several time that day.
Thanks

Still here in build 12.0.267
Using the Windows Media player engine appears to trigger crashes slightly more frequently, but nothing I'd say is significant.
Don't suppose this log throws any light on anything?

Clean log from clicking the MC12 icon to it failing to load the database & asking what it wants me to do next.
