Failed to find local Media Server – possible solution
« on: July 05, 2007, 08:40:47 pm »

I encountered this error after upgrading to Vista Ultimate on my server and client computers.  The computers are on a private LAN using MC 12.x connected to the same switch.

On my computers I have the Windows firewall service turned off.  When I enabled the firewall service and turned off the firewall the library server started connecting with no problem.  Odd but it worked.

Hope this helps.
G.

The steps follow:

Enable Firewall service

Go to Control Panel --> Administrative Tools -->Services-->Windows Firewall and enable service.

Disable Firewall

Go to Control Panel-->Windows Firewall and select change settings.  You can turn the firewall off or select allow programs through Windows Firewall and select Media Center as an exception.

To make sure I understand:

Firewall on: will not find Media Servers.

Firewall Service turned off: will not find Media Servers.

Firewall off, but Firewall Service turned on: will find Media Servers.

Thanks,

j

Firewall service off  = will not find media server

Firewall service on  = will find media server

Firewall on (with Firewill service on) = will find media server but will prompt you to allow program to access and run.

Firewall off (with Firewill service on) = will find media server with no prompt.

The key is having the Firewall service enabled.
