Menu Bar Documentation
« on: July 09, 2007, 12:50:22 pm »

Where can I find an item-by-item description of menu items? For example, I want to know the difference between Edit > Tag, and Edit > Tagging Mode? Or set the number of Undos, etc.?

The help file is the best documentation we have.

Interact also has a wealth of knowledge.

I searched the FAQs and the Help index and topics, but couldn't find out what Edit > Tag and Edit > Tagging Mode are used for. Perhaps you could explain them?

Edit > Tag: when you click on this a small screen jumps up in the left bottom corner giving you the possebility to see/change the tags from the files you selected.

Edit > Tagging Mode: this is only enabled in panes view. when you use this, you can change the values or add values to the files you select at the bottom by clicking in the small squares behind values in the panes. (you can see that they get enabled when in tagging mode).

try it.

or, from the help file: help>contents

Tagging Mode enables the checkboxes in the Action Pane (above the list or thumnails) when a View Scheme is selected in the organization tree. It allows for quick editing of file properties (tags).
To enable Tagging Mode, you must first display the Action Pane by selecting a View Scheme in the tree. Then go to Edit Tagging Mode, or press F4, and repeat to turn off.

Tagging Mode

The other way to modify file properties is to use Tagging Mode.

1.   Select a View Scheme in the tree (you must select the Parent, not Child of the Scheme).

2.               Select an item in the Action Panes to narrow the list of files, or simply select files directly from the list. Files must be selected in the list in order for Tagging Mode to start.

3.   Press F4 or go to Edit > Tagging Mode. The check boxes in the Action Pane will become enabled. Checked items in the Action Panes reflect the tags for the currently selected file(s). If multiple files are selected, you may see squares in the Action Panes. These show that some of the selected files include this tag.

4.   Check or uncheck boxes in the Action Pane to modify the selected file(s) accordingly. If the tag you want is not in the list, select the last tag in the list (New People, or New Events, etc.). You can browse for a field name, or you can type your own.

5.   Press F4 to exit Tagging Mode.

Example

Go to People/Places/Events in the tree.

Under People, select Sam.

All pictures that include Sam are displayed in the bottom list.

You notice that one of the pictures doesn't include Sam at all.  Click on that picture, press F4 and uncheck "Sam" under people. But if Gerry and Tom are in that picture, check "Gerry" and "Tom" under People. If those names do not exist under people, select "New People" and type Gerry, then repeat for Tom.  Press F4 again to exit tagging mode.

Do a similar thing with other fields. Perhaps the Gerry & Tom picture was taken in Toronto, during the Film Festival. You could select (or create) "Toronto" as the Place, and Film Fest as the Event.

To view all pictures of Gerry in the future, just select People/Places/Events in the tree and then click on Gerry in the people column. To view all pictures of Gerry and all pictures of Tom, select hold the Ctrl key and select Gerry and then Tom under People.

To edit tag information using the File Properties dialog box:

1.   Select file(s)

2.   Press Alt + Enter or go to the Action Window and select Tag.

3.   Go to the field you want to edit and enter the information.

To view all fields or to select the fields you want displayed, click on the Action Window Tools button (top left of the Action Window).
