How about resizing images without overwriting?
« on: July 13, 2007, 12:19:09 pm »

I guess I'm a little confused why the resize function always overwrites the orignal image. Seems like that would be desired in very few instances. How about the option to resize and rename? Or always rename and let the user delete the original if desired. I haven't tried the resize function, since I dont' want to accidently overwrite my orignal images, so I stop at the warning  screen. If it gives the option to rename after you agree to the resizing the original, then please let me know. I take it that is not an option though. Thanks

No rename options. You accept the warning, pick your size and click OK. The original is replaced.

see now, what I'd really like is for MC to resize (or otherwise alter) the original image, preserve the original, and create a link between the two (or three, or more) images, with the option to only show the most current edit, or see all images in the set.

I've got quite close to this manually using a bat file, auto import and some creative view construction, but it would be oh so sweet to have MC manage these things auto-magically.

bigmikey,
have you considered using MC's "Send to... > External" options?
While MC12 has seen gigantic strides forward in the image handling department, there is still some considerable way to go before "Send to... > AcdSee" falls off my right click MRU list.
This could potentially introduce another problem however, because after saving an edited image, either over itself or as a new file, the tag info is not retained within the file. My workaround here is to use "Send to..." to send the file to a bat file which makes a copy of the file, then send that file to either AcdSee or Photoshop. Generally, while editing the file, MC gets busy in the background importing the new file and all the tags it contains, so, after saving the edited image, all that's needed to write the tags back to the new file is an "Update tags from library"

sounds messy  ?

Yet, if you used a 3rd party app on its own, i imagine this what you would do.

You're saying lets use MC as a win explorer replacement.

99.9% of the time, MC has replaced explorer when it comes to browsing and managing my media files.

So long as the tags are right, it works a bit like this:

All files on view:

Similar images get grouped, with all but one chosen image hidden from view. The image shown is what I call the "Top Image"

While viewing in "Top Image" only mode, I use the thumbnail text to show a "°" to indicate an edited image, and a "±" to indicate that the image is part of a set of original images. If I want to view all the images in a set, or the edited and original versions together, I use the "Locate > Advanced >" function to take me there...

I import images to a central location, then tag them and get MC to file them away according to their [source] and [date]. I cannot remember the last time I visited these directories using either explorer or Opus.

You mentioned Opus, did you manage to get MC's shell integration working with it ?

i'm currently trialling Opus to see whether its any faster & more resource friendly than win explorer.
