Import winamp library
« on: July 17, 2007, 04:05:20 pm »

Hi everybody, I've recently discovered JRiver and I must admit I plan to buy it. This an excellent software and it handle very well my large library. However some tweaks and option are missing (for example a best handling of automatic cover download ...)
Anyway my fist question is in the title: is it possible to import a winamp library (at least I'd like to import ratings) ?
I've searched the forum and found nothing. (even a winamp -> xml -> jriver solution would be appreciated)

Thanks a lot.

If the ratings are saved in the file tags, they may just import with the files.

No, we gave Jim a free license to media center.

(Haven't used winamp since v 2.72 so I'm of little help.)

Hey.  We'd really like to help.  Honest.

Ratings can be stored in some file tags.  Are you certain it isn't?  You could try importing a few files into MC12.

We're interested.  Really.

Hey thanks for your answer.
Yes I'm certain, I think there is no real iDtag field for ratings. Is there any ?
If you need testing from my side, feel free to ask !

If rating is your only concern you could do 5 playlists in the winamp one for the 1star songs, one for the 2star and so on...
Then play playlist with songs rated as 1star in MC. Select all and mark as one star. Next playlists files as 2 star... Do this with all 5 playlists.
You get the point...

It's manual job but shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to complete

Ok thanks for the tip, it's not the best solution but it works great.
I have another question : is there any "amarok-like" plugin displaying other albums from the artist, favourite tracks or tabs linking to automatic lyrics search/discography search ? Is it possible to do that with the html current view display ?

No, but all that information (and lots more) is already in the library.

if you were playing a track by Lloyd Cole, a right click->Locate->Artist
- will show you all tracks in your library by LLoyd
- if you click the ratings column or setup sorting to be in descending order, the tracks you like best will appear towards the top.
- If you add the field [Number of Plays] as a column to that same viewscheme, then just click its header and the most/least played tracks will be displayed.

Thanks for your help.
I know that all this information is already in the library, but you know why amarok is so famous: its a mix of eye-candy and loads of information well displayed...

hmm...amarok is famous cos its the *only* media library client side app on *nix. It's still yrs behind MC if you went head to head in terms of performance & usability/features. Of course there are plenty of other players/jukeboxes that are acessable via a web browser in *nix land, but i think all this kind of interaction is best handled by non browser exclusive type apps, especially when we are talking about *large* datasets being displayed. The 'large' bit is where MC shines.

Personally i'm not so interested in such a display unless its user-configurable, in Amarok's case that might be the case of changing a HTML template. I'm not so sure the same will be the case with MC, if it chose this path, though i would be interested for it to be. The reason is M$'s IE would be the choice in terms of ease of devlopment for browsing. I think you know how good IE is.. already ;), why tie MC to the latest, never ending stream of security updates from M$.

The other more secure browsers are not as easy to embed for this type of purpose.

Ok. So you think that it's impossible because of the structure of the library?
You know I discovered J River last week and I'm still playing with the software and trying to find if everything I want is possible with it. (and I love to have lots of information related to the "now playing")
hit_ny, thanks again for your answers

I have played with theater view ofr the last ten minutes: this sh*t is amazing !!! Wonderful job! (excuse the exclamation marks).
Thereafter I had a request that I was to shy to ask, but considering the way MC handles beautifully images, would't it be possible to display a coverflow-like, but maybe in a more usable way:

The library does not have anything to do with it.

It's the display of the data that i was referring to, unless i'm mistaken doesn't Amarok use HTML templates to display those favourite tracks and most often played stats etc ?

I mean: if you want to display all the albums of the selected artist, you need to query the library for this info... so it has to do with the library, not only with the display
BTW in MC the "playing now" uses a html template too, doesn't it ?
