Is "CSV" a Support File Type??
« on: July 20, 2007, 11:35:04 pm »

Repost from July 8 (or thereabouts):

In MC12 Help, searching on "CSV" brings up Supported File Types. Displaying that topic presents a table that lists MS Office, webpage files, Acrobat, etc.

Where can I find more information about this feature, and specifically, information about importing the contents of an XLS (Excel worksheet) file into MC12??

MC does not handle the contents of the "document" files. It's database and tools can be used for organizing and cataloging these file types. The play command opens these files in the default external program. The "right-click > Send to > External" tool can be used for running a file with specific command line parameters.

What kind of data you would like to import? Do you have media file tags in excel sheets?
MC can apply library data from properly formatted XML files.

Here is an example of such a file:

Code: [Select]
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes" ?>
<MPL Version="2.0" Title="Various file types in a playlist">

The filename extension must be .mpl.
The "File > Import Playlist" tool can apply "mpl" metadata to already imported files. The other import tools can import mpl metadata only if the media files that are included in the mpl playlist file are not already present in the library.

To import from CSV will require you to transform it via xsl to xml, specifically mc's flavour of xml or mpl.

To see what mpl looks like, select some files, then File->Export Playlist->mpl

output range (choose selection).

looks like alex beat me to it :)

Yes, it is doable, but the porting from Excel to XML is indirect and rather involved, more involved than simply editing within MC12.

Thanks to the help from folks like you in this forum, I bit the bullet and finished editing my tags without having to use the Excel file. There is a bit of a learning curve in MC12, but after learning and being told the various shortcuts and capabilities, I'm quite happy with the results and have since deleted the old Excel file.
