Playing dvr-ms on MC 12
« on: July 30, 2007, 09:40:58 am »

Hello all,

I am using orb (www.orb.com) along with my TV tuner to record shows that I watch later.  The files that are created have dvr-ms extension and I believe that they are MPEG2 files in a Microsoft Media Center format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVR-MS).

When trying to play the file in MC12, I get the sound but no picture.

Can anyone help me resolve the issue?

Most likely it is a DirectShow filter issue. Can you play the same file using Windows Media Player?

When playing a file in MC12, try right-clicking in the display window and choose "DirectShow Filters". What do you see listed there?

You can specify which video decoder MC should try using. Tools -> Options -> Playback -> DirectShow Playback Settings ...

On the right-side of the resulting window, find dvr-ms from the list, make sure the check box is checked (most likely it is). Select the entry and click "Select Filters". Wait a few seconds for the next dialog window to appear. When it does, choose "StremBufferSource" filter (by checking the checkbox) from the list on the left ("Source Filters"), and select an appropriate video decoder filter from the list on the right ("Other Filters"). You may have to experiment with different MPEG-2 video decoders. If you can not find a good video decoder to use, you may need to download and install one. CCCP codec pack is recommanded.

Additionally, you can experiment with different video renderer selection on the same window (lower-left of the window). If your OS is Vista, try using Enhanced Video Renderer.

I used the option to use Media Player renderer when possible. The problem is solved. Thanks!

Glad that your problem is solved. If you ever want to explore playing video using DirectShow, feel free to ask questions here.

Well...  I went back to the old setting (do not use WMedia), exited MC 12 and started the dvr-ms again.

I right-clicked on the video (black screen since picture was not showing withoug WMedia decoding), chose "Select Filters...". The system got busy and finally MC 12 crashed. Although I had the Unhandled Exception message, playback was still going on.

Below is the crash report.

While attempting this, I was encoding a TV show using MediaCoder. Could it be related?

Crash report probably will not help much. MC's log file may. The log file also may be too large to post. You can email it do me. yaobing at jriver dot com

When you play the file, since there is audio, a DirectShow graph must have been built. Right-clicking and choosing "DirectShow Filters" should give you a list of filters used.

Crash after choosing "Select Filters" is very likely caused by a bad filter on your system. MC tries to enumerate all filters on your system. If you have a bad behaving filter, there can be a problem.

It is most likely a filter problem.

The filters look normal, except "Decrypt/Tag" and "Decrypt/Tag 001". I do not know what they are. The program found need for two of these. Maybe they are needed to decrypt the file before it can be played with other filters. Do your dvr-ms files have DRM on them? The question is whether the "DScaler MPEG2 decoder" (which is a pretty good mpeg2 decoder by the way) can work with them.

Interesting.  It looks like the last operation is performed on a component from Orb www.orb.com.

I am not sure how to troubleshoot this though...  :(

Once you turn logging on (Help -> Logging, check "Output to a log file" checkbox, and make sure "Playback" is checked under "Types of events to log"), email me two logs.

The first log is for playback (audio but no video). Start MC and go right to playing a file. Stop playback and go to Help-> Logging. Click "Click to email log files".

The second log is for crashing upon "Select Filters". First please try "Select Filters" when not playing the file, to see if that also cause a crash. Go to Tools -> Options -> Playback -> DirectShow Playback Settings... Find dvr-ms type in the list on the right-hand side of the window, select the entry and click "Select Filters". If that does not cause a crash, try selecting a MPEG-2 video decoder from the "Other Filters" list. Experiment with different filters if you find more than one. Also experiment with different Video Renderer selection (Legacy Video Renderer, VMR7, VMR9 etc.).

If you get a crash, restart MC and immediately go to Help -> Logging, and click  "Click to email log files".

Ok.

I played the file and sent you the log.  I stopped playback and went to Tools -> Options -> Playback -> DirectShow Playback Settings... I found dvr-ms type in the list on the right-hand side of the window, I selected the entry and clicked "Select Filters".

Boom, Crash. I sent you the logs as well...

Is it possible to manually select the filter in the registry or in a config file somewhere?

Your help is really appreciated.

Thank you!

Without any media playing - try changing your settings under "Tools --> Options --> Playback --> Video --> DirectShow Playback Setting"

No luck this also makes MC 12 crash on my computer. So it seems that having the filters active or not don't make a difference. Is there an XML file or a registry entry that I could manually change?

Did you change the DirectShow settings?  What did you do?  Any details might help.

Some DirectShow filters are bad.

That will be difficult. You have to know exactly how DirectShow represents each filter with an unique string of text.  I am swamped by other tasks at hand at the moment.  That is why I have not read your log files yet.  I hope when I finally read them I can see which filter is the culprit, and then if you know where that filter comes from, you can try uninstalling it or reinstalling it. I will let you know next week whether I find it or not.
