Number Plays BUG
« on: August 16, 2007, 11:43:45 pm »

If I change the Number Plays field to display "Plays," which is allowed in the options interface, it does not take.  It still shows Number Plays.

I believe changing this to simply "Plays" would be a good adjustment because the value for this field would rarely exceed 4 digits, which is very similar to the size of "Plays."

I also believe it would be very nice if there was a feature in MC for "Number Plays," "Rating," "Last Played," "Last Skipped," and "Skip Count" should be similar to how email client's handle IMAP folders.  They let the user pick what folder will contain Trash, Sent, and Drafts.  So MC should let all of these personal statistics fields be customized to certain fields and then stored in the tags...such as [Ben's Rating] or [Ben's Number Plays].

By the way--what does Last Skipped and Skip Count do?  Skip Count seems to be empty on all my files yet I skip songs all the time.  Skip Count could be very useful for weeding out high-rated songs that aren't really liked because they keep getting skipped on the desktop.

after changing the display name of a field, you will most likely need to clear the cache by restarting MC so as to see the new display name show up.
watch out for any wierdness going on, as noted in this post.

re. [last skipped] and [skip count]
[skip count] increments by 1 whenever a track is stopped before it reaches 50% of its duration. "Stopped" means stopped, no matter how it happens. You could close MC while the track is playing, start playing another track, go back to the previous/next track, or you could press the stop button. Any of these actions while less than 50% played will increment [skip count] by 1 and note the date/time in [last skipped]. If the track is more than 50% played, then [number plays] and [last played] are updated instead.

It's well documented that in my, very humble opinion, skip count should only update if the the "Next" >> function is used to skip to the next track. I don't find the data all that useful as to my mind, it is far too clouded by other, legitimate reasons for stopping a track that do not count as "skips"

Strange.  Only 8 of my ~13,000+ songs have a "1."  That doesn't make much sense at all.  I skip and stop songs all the time.  What kind of values are others looking at for skip count?  Maybe my Skip Count field is broken.

Ya know.  I'm really losing it.  It probably is correct because I just, yesterday, created a new MC database as I do occasionally to freshen things up.  It should be accurate and I'll keep an eye on it.

Anyone else using skip count to help create a playlist?  I can see creating a playlist where [rating]=4,5, [Play Count]<10

That seems like it would help weed out the songs you don't really like anymore.

Either that or just create a "Skip Catcher" playlist where you can find songs you skip a lot OR vice versa.  You could have one where the play count is HIGH, skip count is LOW, and rating is either LOW or UNRATED.

It's amazing how handy this field could get, except in those cases where you just let MC go for hours with a short playlist.  It will bring up all the play counts a lot.
