Renaming Filename/Path to point to network drive
« on: August 26, 2007, 06:00:24 am »

I'm somewhat puzzled: I used to be able to use Library Tools / Find & Replace to put a new drive name against files (for example to replace "C:\" with "X:\".  Now if I try to do this the following happens:  If the new drive (lets call it X) is active, MC12 asks whether I want to replace the files - no I don't but if i say no, the action stops.  If The X drive is not active, it comes back with Tagging errors and defaults back to the previous drive C:\.

I know this used to be possible before as i have done it before. Am I missing something or is there a new / better way replacing drive letters in the library.

Many thanks

I just did exactly that the other day just fine.  I repointed MC12 to a network share for some of my Video Lib, then did a find and replace on the Filename so as not to lose tags, thumbnails etc.  The only difference I can see is that MC12 could see the new location and I did not delete the files from the old drive till all was well.

Thanks

bbrib,

Hide the files in the old location first (for example, change the base folder name outside MC).

If the files are offline inside MC the procedure should just quickly fix the paths. In my experience it shouldn't matter if the new location has the actual files or not, but perhaps you should hide them as well and only after a succesfull "Find and Replace" operation make them available to MC.

Naturally, you should back up the library and disable the Auto-Importer before proceeding.

Not sure about this but I seem to remember that if I disabled tagging (tools->options->general->update tags when file info changes),
the find/replace path worked like before (=like charm).

Many thanks for all your commetns. After some more fiddling around I got this done.   :D But now an additional slight problem:

How do I get the external coverart pointed to the network drive? I dont seem to be able to access the Coverart data field via Find & Replace...  ?

Any clues?

Cheers
