Other applications flicker when using MC 12
« on: October 05, 2007, 09:20:37 am »

So far I have managed to import lots of media into JRiver and create playlists with both video and audio content. While I like this application I am troubled that it causes other applications to flicker when it is open. In fact it even causes its own pop-up dialogs to flicker. I have a couple of Google widgets on the desktop and the flicker it causes is most annoying.

My machine has a single core Pentium 3.2 processor with 2 GB of memory and an NVDIA card.
The refresh rate is 75 Hz.

This problem occurs even if JRiver is doing nothing but it becomes worse after playing a video.

That sounds like a video driver issue.  Vista?

Did you try updating your video card drivers?

Any other unusual applications installed that could affect video?

I have also observed the flicker but have never bothered to report it. It is most obvious when watching a full screen video with MC and a tray icon pops up with a message (such as Windows notifying that new updates are available). The pop-up message flickers very vigorously.

What do you have in common?  Please copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

Any third party plug-ins?

That is pretty normal for anything that runs full-screen, trying to maintain the pre-eminent z-level (cant remember if it works up or down). When you get those little 'toasts' or other pop-ups, they try to get the top-most level of the screen, but then so does MC. A short but vigorous fight ensues. This is often also seen with games and other full-screen apps. From his description, Shimon's problem sounds a little more generic, as in it sounds like it may be happening in std view.

@Shimon: Are you using a 3d visualisation at the time?

Sorry - I wasn't on the computer for the last 24 hours so I wasn't following the interesting discussion.

I think I described my problem wrongly and I am now pretty sure that it is not a Media Center problem. What I sometimes get is probably best described as your Z order fight which can be easily fixed by stopping one of the other applications that I insist on running. I have noticed a similar problem when viewing movies with the Apple QuickTime player.

Thanks for the help. Looks like I shall go ahead and buy this program after all.
