Importing MP3 files
« on: September 13, 2007, 11:07:25 am »

Hello,

I have my computer installed newly and following MC12.0.318.
MC12 does not import all mp3 files and it puts my avi files in the music library.
This ist always the same problem! How I can solve this?

Thx.

Which mp3 files does it not import? Are they in a different location on the disk?

I believe that avi files can be audio OR video, and so MC is not sure where to put them (someone correct me if I'm wrong please).
You can change the type manually.

If MC cannot play the avi's (ie codecs not installed) then it "ignores" the video "half" and lists only the sound "half" as music because it can play the sound.

Can you play the avi in MC?

In my experience, the cccp codec pack (linked above by gappie) works really well -- I recommend it (especially the latest version.)  I never had to "configure" anything in MC other than checking all the filetypes in the "DirectShow Filters" list (i.e. Options > Playback > Video > DirectShow Playback Settings > DirectShow Filters.)  I just installed the pack, checked the filetype boxes, and playback worked.

That said, I don't think I needed the cccp pack for AVI files -- I needed it for playback of filetypes such as mp4 and m4a.  I "thought" that windows (and Windows Media Player) naively came with codecs for AVI files, but I obviously could be wrong.

Actually an avi is just a file exension for a video stream and music stream wrapped up together.

The video stream can be encoded with lots of different encoders (like divx of xvid), the audio stream can also be encoded with various encoders although the majority is mp3. Windows plays the native ones mpeg1/mpeg2 out of the box but not divx etc.

A DVD vob file is basically an avi that is encoded with a specific type of encoder.

And, these three avi files still are in the music library. I do not understand this!  ?

There is a small utility GSpot, (http://www.headbands.com/gspot/) by running, the program tells you which codec the file uses.  Then according to the information you get, you could download the codec.  The program runs on MS OS's. I don't know such an application for other OS's.

One good thing to have the VLC installed (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) installed on your system.  If this fine utility can't play your video file, then there is a possibility, that your file itself has problems, not a codec issue.

Both of the programs are free, and VLC has many versions for many different OS's.

I would start with VLC, to make sure that the file is OK, and then move on to GSpot.

Hope it helps

Look under the "GSpot v2.70a Information, Screenshots, and Downloads" and then go downloading.

I personally don't like being given just the file, because whatever I download, I have to read about it, and see if it fits me.

This was the reason, that I gave just the address to website,  not a direct link to file.

Anyway, again hope it helps.  It helped me many times.
