Need help getting cover art onto my phone's storage card
« on: November 13, 2007, 05:33:31 pm »

Recently purchased the Motorola Q9m from Verizon.  They call it the "Q Music 9m", but for something with "Music" in the name, it doesn't display the cover art that is embedded in the MP3 file.

If I place the jpg file in the same folder as the song, and rename it to "folder.jpg", the cover art will display.

So it seems that if I want to see cover art, I will need to move it and name it folder.jpg.  I tried various sync settings, but what I saw on the phone's storage card, was the "song.mp3" and another file with the extention ".alb" with a size of 0 kb.

I want to move a playlist of about 100 songs from various artists.  I can get MC12 to create the folders properly on the storage card, but I don't want to manually move all the different cover art, then rename it.

Is there a way to sync this or use other library tools so that the cover art will move as folder.jpg and be placed in the same folder as the song?

If you can post more details about how the directory structure works, we might be able to add support.

Hi Jim.  When I read your post about having success with the RAZR, I was encouraged to try MC12 with my new Q9m.

I've been able to sync selected songs, but the cover art isn't coming over as I wrote earlier.

I'd be happy to help with the directory structure if you can tell me what to look for.  All I can tell you at this point, is that the phone has a slot for MiniSD (actually uses MicroSD with MiniSD adapter) and I have a 2gb card that I want to put music on.

My machine has Vista Home Premium and I can hook up the phone and use My Computer to view files and folders on the phone.

After the opening post, I tried moving a couple of files using WMP11 and it did work.  The songs and cover art both transferred.  The cover art came over as "folder.jpg" and is in the same folder as the song.

Where do the files go?  For example

\music
\my video
etc.

And what is the exact name of the device if you open Windows Explorer?

What file types does it support?  We could guess that it's similar to the RAZR, but it would be nice to know.

Take a look at the pdt.xml file in MC's install directory.  Open in notepad.  It's here: C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center 12\Data\Default Resources

You'll see what we need to know.

I'll try my best to provide the info.

Audio is stored under:  \Music         mp3, wma
Video is stored under:  \Video         wmv
Playlists stored under:  \Playlists      (haven't tried to move a playlist. maybe MC put the folder there?)
Images stored under:   \Pictures      jpg
(File types I've moved. I'm sure others are supported as well.)

In Windows Explorer the phone is listed as: Motorola MOTO Q9m
The internal memory is: \
The external memory is: Storage Card

Bullish,

Can you post your system info from the Help menu after the phone is recognized by MC?

Thanks,
Rick

Have you tried the setting "Save cover art to 'Folder.jpg' file" under handheld Options > Files & Paths?

Edit: I updated to 12.0.375 and I'm happy to report that the cover art is transferring properly. Thank you.

The transfers are slow--about one minute per track on average. WMP11 isn't speedy either and I think the USB connection could be limited to 1.1 speeds.

Answer below pertains to build 12.0.338

Rick, yes I did have "Save cover art to 'Folder.jpg' file" enabled.  I ran another test to make sure and the result is the same as before.

The artist and album folders get created properly and the song is copied, but instead of a file named "folder.jpg" next to the song, there is a file named "Album.alb" with a size of 0 bytes as reported by Windows Explorer.  I don't actually see the extension, but looking at Properties shows "Type of File: ALB File".

For example in my test, I transferred the Bruce Springsteen song "Radio Nowhere" from the album, "Magic".  After the transfer there was a folder "Bruce Springsteen" with a sub-folder, "Magic".  When the "Magic" folder was opened, I found the song, Radio Nowhere.mp3 and the file "Magic", with a size of 0 bytes and described by Windows Explorer as an ALB file.
