Can Browse MC TiVo server through TiVo, but won't play
« on: October 14, 2007, 11:17:10 pm »

I have recently been having some playback isses with MC and TiVo, primarily stuttering audio or, at times, the audio just stops - sometimes skipping to the next song, sometimes giving a server error. I had attributed it to the wireless connection, figuring it just couldn't feed the data fast enough. However, I've now started having a much different issue.

I am running MC 12.0.329 and TiVo destktop 2.5, although I have TiVo desktop paused. My TiVo S3 is running 9.1-01-2-648.

I am able to browse my music through TiVo, navigating all the way down to an individual song. However, when I try to play a song, the title information and time bar appear, but it never starts playing. The title screensaver just stays on the screen. The info on the MC TiVo plugin says:

10/14/07 22:41:05 - Starting...
10/14/07 22:41:05 - Trying Port 8070
10/14/07 22:41:06 - Checking TiVo Beacon installation
10/14/07 22:41:06 - Connecting to Beacon.
10/14/07 22:41:07 - Checking TiVo Beacon installation
10/14/07 22:41:07 - Connecting to Beacon.
10/14/07 22:41:07 - Running on Port 8070
10/14/07 22:42:55 - Browsing File: F:\My Music\Annie Lennox\Songs Of Mass Destruction\01 - Dark Road.mp3
10/14/07 22:44:36 - Browsing File: F:\My Music\Gwen Stefani\The Sweet Escape\01 Wind It Up.mp3
10/14/07 22:53:57 - Browsing File: F:\My Music\Inxs\Kick\01 Guns In The Sky.mp3

So it looks like it's finding the file, but not playing back. Each time I've waited several minutes for playback to start but no go. Any ideas?

It's also worth noting that I tried playing through my S2, and after a little hesitation, it played fine. I tried rebooting the S3 just in case something happened during the Fall upgrade a few weeks ago, but that didn't change anything. It still does everything except actually play. I'm dying without my tunes here, folks, so any help would be appreciated.

I was about to guess "virus checker" but that wouldn't explain a complete inability to play MP3 files.

The bitrate you're using no longer works?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. It seems really strange that it works on my S2 and not on my S3, especially since it's been working on my S3 since I got it almost a year ago.

I didn't get to this today, sorry, but I was trying. At a guess, there's a firmware upgrade that broke something.

If you want to make a network sniff, that would help me (especially if I'm unable to reproduce it here).

Thanks for the reply John. I downloaded and ran Wireshark and, of course, everything works. I worked for a good 4 hours over the last two days trying to figure this out and absolutely nothing has changed except the installation of Wireshark. It's like taking your car to the garage - it never makes that funny noise when the mechanic is listening. This is the text from the TiVo plugin:

10/15/07 21:20:29 - Starting...
10/15/07 21:20:29 - Trying Port 8070
10/15/07 21:20:29 - Checking TiVo Beacon installation
10/15/07 21:20:29 - Connecting to Beacon.
10/15/07 21:20:30 - Running on Port 8070
10/15/07 21:20:56 - Bad Request: Unknown Command /TiVoConnect??Command=FlushServer
10/15/07 21:21:28 - Browsing File: F:\My Music\Annie Lennox\Songs Of Mass Destruction\01 - Dark Road.mp3
10/15/07 21:21:28 - Sharing (with conversion): F:\My Music\Annie Lennox\Songs Of Mass Destruction\01 - Dark Road.mp3
10/15/07 21:22:07 - Browsing File: F:\My Music\Eagles\Hotel California\01 Hotel California.mp3
10/15/07 21:22:07 - Sharing (with conversion): F:\My Music\Eagles\Hotel California\01 Hotel California.mp3
10/15/07 21:22:25 - Bad Request: Unknown Command /TiVoConnect??Command=FlushServer

The Bad Request at 21:20:56 was the dreaded 3-5-6 error, which I get on a semi-regular basis. After that, though, I was able to browse to and play two songs. I have the Wireshark file for you anyway. I thought it might still be helpful. Let me know how I should get it to you.

I tried to reproduce it here, and can't. The sniff of successful plays won't help me much, so please wait until you can reproduce the problem before sending.

Thanks,

Hopefully it was a fluke and it never happens again, but as soon as it does, I'll send you the sniff. Thanks again.

For what it's worth, I ended up buying a new router and that solved the problem. The old and new were both G routers, but the new one had double the throughput of the old one. It's a D-Link WBR-2310.

I have a N class router and it flies.  It downloads movies with vudu instantly.

Make sure you are converting to mp3 (or a format that TiVo supports).

What format are you converting to?

What sort of error messages are you getting on the Tivo?

What does the server status page show?

Converting to MP3

No error message after I hit play the time bar comes up at thebottom and just stays at 0

The sever page shows it connected to the song.

Convert a file to MP3 (making sure the MP3 encoder is downloaded and running).

Make sure your conversion settings are "Convert if necessary" and try playing a MP3 file on the TiVo (does it play without conversion in the picture).

Copy-and-paste the status pages messages here.

Is the MP3 encoder a separate download?

Is the MP3 encoder a separate download?

MC downloads the needed files automatically on the first use. I don't know if the Tivo server component can do this.

You could try to convert a file to MP3 locally on the server PC for verifying that the encoder works.

Try converting a file: make sure that works (you didn't mention that you had above).

What's the version of the TiVo software/firmware?

I won't be back in the office til tomorrow, I can tell more then...

Tivo automatically downloads the software, this should not be an issue.  Everyone out there should have it.  why should I have to convert a mp3 file, it is already?

The TiVo software version is so I can compare it to my TiVo at work, make sure I have a similar setup.

The conversion is to make sure the mp3 encoder is correctly installed and functioning.

I forgot to mention: any firewalls or virus checkers?

The TiVo server is working for everyone else. It's probably something in your setup that is confusing it. You'll have to help us figure out what that is.

I took a look at the sniff, found one small inconsistency. It did not affect playback on my TiVo system, but I fixed it anyways (12.0.419). It would ONLY affect files that required conversion in any case.

The sniff also leads me to believe it is a firewall, or perhaps a TiVo software update (your TiVo is a different version than mine). It gets to where it should ask for the file, then just doesn't ask.

I am having this same problem.  Tivo Series 3, MC 12.0.534.  I can see MC via Tivo and can browse the library but when I attempt to play a tune, nothing happens.  On the tivo screen, the playback stalls at the beginning of the song.

This problem occurred out of nowhere.  This all worked fine a week ago.  On MC, all files are shown as being .mp3, etc.

I have also tried playing songs via the Tivo software and having the same issue so I'm hoping this is not just a MC issue but some network setting i can change.

Just to throw in on this
My Tivo (series 2)is doing the exact same thing.

I run MC12 and Galleon, and both were working perfectly, then stopped.

MC has always given me problems, but Galleon has been 100% stable till now. Suddenly, I can navigate through my library via both apps, but when I play, the progress bar just sticks at 0 and won't move.

The only thing that I can think of that changed would have to be the Tivo firmway. I'm now running v 9.3.2a-01-2-140, if that helps at all. The prob is, I'm not sure when it got upgraded.

I'll update if I find out more.

I am having the same problem as darin.  I am running MC 11.1.  Streaming audio has always (3 years  :-\) been on again/off again flakey, but now it's just not usable.

I was wondering if anyone using MC 13 (or any version) and TIVO has streaming audio working correctly.  If so, then maybe it is finally time to upgrade.  I didn't want to mess with something that was working, but now that it is not...

Any info would be appreciated, since this is the main way I listen to my music.   :'(

Thanks, Chuck.

Just an update on this.

1) Uninstalling the TIVO desktop helped somewhat. I don't really use it anyway so cest la vie!
2) Rebooting the TIVO (a hard, pull the plug reboot, not a soft, through the menus reboot) appears to fix the "Hang at 0 when playing" problem. It comes back from time to time, but a tivo reboot seems to correct it.
3) Galleon at this point appears to be completely stable, but MC12 isn't, so I've turned off the TIVO server functions and am just using Galleon.

Haven't tried MC13
