Every time I update....

How come everytime I update my MC 12 I have to initialize my iPod for it to work with that version?

Every single time I switch to the next version I have to do it. It takes hours. If I dont initialize, when I plug the iPod in MC attempts to delete every track and resync to my playlist. It does go through with this as it jams.
