When trying to play a CD, MJ crashes the computer.  Have tried un/reinstalling.  Have downloaded fresh copy.  The CD player works fine with other programs.

Okay... that was an unsupported Toshiba drive.  Now trying to use a USB connected Sony CRX10U.  Now it will play one or two notes of a song and then stop.

Did you try : Options > CD-writer Settings > Use generic driver ?

Yes, at your suggestion, i tried generic driver. But it still just play a note and stops. From another thread, i tried unchecking "Use digital playback".  Then it appears to be playing the whole song, but no sound comes out.

In CD playback options, try switching between analog and digital playback.

Yes, i did try switching to analog playback.  The song appears to play all the way through, but produces no sound. When in digital playback it plays one note and stops.
